The Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is known as the “Rainforest Gardener” as many plant species rely on them for seed dispersal and germination. This species has two wattles (A fleshy caruncle hanging from various parts of the head or neck in several groups of birds and mammals). One subspecies (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) for this species can be found in Australia, while Casuarius casuarius can be found in New Guinea. With its jet-black plumage, it can blend into a dark rainforest environment.

Living Dinosaur?
Shoebill Storks (Balaeniceps rex) are large-bodied, sturdy birds with the height ranging from 110 to 140 centimeters). These birds have big, bulbous bill with the size of over 19 centimeters long. With sharp edges on its large bill, the shoebill can easily decapitate its prey and separate out the vegetation that may have been collected with the preys. The shoebill stork can actually fly as they are strong enough to let itself to lift off with the help of its powerful leap and few heavy wing beats (A complete cycle of moving the wing by a bird when flying). Even though they are scary, shoebills are diurnal meaning that they hunt at daytime. They will rarely hunt at night if the moonlight is bright enough. Sadly, this unusual bird is classified as Vulnerable (VU) by the IUCN. Only 3,300 to 5,300 mature shoebills today are remaining. Habitat loss, disturbance by humans, and illegal bird trade are responsible for their population decline.

The genus Bothrochilus (Also known as Leiopython) is the genus consists of seven different species of the “White Lipped Pythons”. These white lipped pythons are non venomous but ofenly confused with venomous snakes due to their triangular head shape. Like other pythons, they feed on small to medium size mammals, frogs, amphibians, and sometimes birds by constricting their preys to death before eating them whole. They are quite large in sizes as they can grow between 1.5-2.5 meters long. Females tend to be larger than males like most of other snake species. In the wild, they are semi-arboreal which means they are living on ground but also in trees.

Spitting Cobras are any one of cobra species that have the ability to spit or spray venom from their fangs in defense. These cobras spray their venom by squeezing their muscles on the venom glands and let the venom out of the front openings in the fangs. Their venom can actually travel 1-3 meters depending on the size of the cobra. In the picture, this is a golden spitting cobra (Naja sumatrana). They are also called equatorial spitting cobra, malayan spitting cobra, or Sumatran spitting cobra. They can be found throughout Southeast Asia. Like other cobra species, this species venom is mainly neurotoxins but may also concist of cardiotoxins and cytotoxins.

Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) has a face without any feathers with a black feathered body. They are founded in semi-arid desert, steppe regions. They are carnivores and will take insects, worms, small fish, small birds, small mammals, and reptiles. 10 to 15 years is the lifespan for them in the wild but they can live up to about 25-30 years in captivity. They are colonial birds which means the ibis don’t just live in pairs but also live with other ibis. They are listed as Endangered (EN) in IUCN Red List due to several threats for instance residential and commercial development.

Gaur (Bos gaurus) is the largest extant bovine, animals consist in the family of cloven hoofed, ruminant vertebrates (Family Bovidae), native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. This species is also called Indian Bison and is listed as “Vulnerable” in IUCN Red List. They are diurnal by nature but in other areas where disturbed by humans, they can become nocturnal. Due to their size and strength, gaurs have few natural enemies besides humans. Leopards and dhole packs normally attack unguarded calves or unhealthy guars. In Thailand, gaurs are higly threatened by poaching commercial trade in meats and their horns.

Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus) are social animals which live in herds. Male will leave his herd when he is about 6-7 years old, and will ready to mate when he is about 10-15 years. On the other hand, female is ready to mate when she is about 15-16 years with the gestation period of 22 months. Asian elephants can be found in Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Sumatra. They survive in several conditions, from open grasslands to deep evergreen forests. These giants consume 150-200 kilograms of food per day and produce over 100 kilograms of dung. The elephant’s dung is important as soil fertilizer and for the dipersal of plant seeds. This is my first time seeing wild elephants. To be honest, I’m surprised to see so many individuals walking in front of me.

Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) are also known as the crab-eating macaques. They are the most common macaque in Thailand due to its habituation of elevations and isolated forests where temples have been subsequently built as well as mangroves and beach areas which are near tourist locations. This species is known as invasive species and a threat to biodiversity in many locations including Hong Kong and western New Guinea. For more information, you can scroll down to the previous crab-eating macaque post.

Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiaca), sometimes known as polar owl, is a large, white owl of the true owl family. It is a patient hunter that perches and waits to identify its prey before attacking it. Snowy owl has keen eyesight and great hearing, which allows them to find pret that is hard to see under thick vegetation or snow cover. Its feet are covered with feathers which provides ample insulation for the cold climate. When it came to the breeding time, female remains with the youngs while male brings the food which is fed to the youngs by female. Snowy owls are diurnal unlike most owls that are nocturnal.
