I recently got to see the flowers of Dendrobium falconeri for the first time. I find it truly fascinating how the flowers of this species can be so big considering that they have such thin and slender stems. This species has a rather wide distribution occurring from E Himalayas to Taiwan, and Indochina.

Taiwan Bush Warblers around Wuling Pass were also more confiding than in other places. Even though I heard plenty of them at many locations, they were all secretive and refused to come out into the open. These birds at Wuling, however, frequently walked up to sing from the top of the bushes. Like other Locustella warblers, this species has a really weird, insect-like song.

Yellowish-bellied Bush Warbler was one of the most abundant birds around Wuling Pass on Hehuanshan. I was shocked to see how confiding and showy they were. Most Horornis bush warblers that I've seen are normally shy and fast, so when these birds came up to sing in the open at close range for several minutes, I was absolutely stoked. Interestingly, individuals of the same species that I came across at other locations were not nearly as bold as the ones at Wuling. It's interesting to see how birds of the same species can behave totally differently based on the locations.

Taiwan Rosefinch is another beautiful endemic bird of Taiwan. It used to be treated as conspecific with Vinaceous Rosefinch in the mainland, but got split due to slight differences in plumage and calls. It is found only on high mountains between 2280–3500 m. I was happy to come across several flocks during my visit to Wuling Pass on Hehuanshan. These birds were incredibly tame like most of the other birds around the pass.

Taiwan Whistling-Thrush was pleasantly common at Daxueshan. I came across several pairs that were busy collecting nesting materials and building the nests. Like most whistling-thrushes, this species also has beautiful glossy blue plumage. Most birds were active at dawn and dusk, so it was quite challenging to photograph them in low light.

As mentioned in the previous post, Red-billed Blue-Magpie was another species that visited the same waterhole as the Black Baza. A small flock of about 5-6 birds frequently dropped by the waterhole throughout the day. Even though this species can be quite common in many places around Thailand, it's always nice to get a good look of this beauty.

Every summer, a small population of Black Bazas breed in my local patch of dry deciduous forest. The best time to see them is when it's extremely hot and dry, as the birds would then come to drink at a waterhole. Even though this species is not rare in Thailand, it is a bird that birders always love to see. I finally managed to photograph this beautiful raptor up close in my local patch this year. It spent a long time waiting on the trees until it finally got to come down and drink at the waterhole, as it was constantly being harrassed by the larger Red-billed Blue-Magpie.

Another good orchid that I saw while in Taiwan was the beautiful Dendrobium moniliforme. Their white flowers really stood out among the dark canopy of the coniferous forest. Unfortunately, they were all way too high up for me to smell the flowers. It is described that the flowers have a beautiful fragrance and they were used as perfume in the past.

I was excited to find this beautiful Thrixspermum laurisilvaticum (also a synonym of T. pygmaeum) during my recent trip to Taiwan. The flowers were small but had a really pretty pattern inside the lip. The flowers can also last for several days unlike most Thrixspermum species which the flowers only bloom for one day.

Rusty Laughingthrush was another endemic laughingthrush that I saw in Taiwan. Unlike the White-whiskered Laughingthrush in the previous post, this species was generally shyer and much more difficult to photograph. Luckily, I came across this pair that was resting in dense vegetation near the road. They spent several minutes preening themselves and each other allowing me to get these photos through small windows.

White-whiskered Laughingthrush is definitely the easiest laughingthrush to see in Taiwan. It is endemic to the central mountain range where it can be easily found above 1,800 m from sea level. These birds can be extremely tame even for a Taiwanese bird standard. They are also very curious and tend to come close to humans in search of food. Most of the times, I had troubles stepping backward to fit them in the frame as they were just too close.
