The Red Crossbill has unusual crossed mandibles that act like precision tools, allowing it to pry apart conifer cones and extract the seeds hidden inside. Even more remarkably, Red Crossbills can breed at almost any time of year, including the middle of winter if cone crops are abundant. Scientists have also identified multiple "call types" across North America, each with subtly different vocalizations and bill sizes that appear adapted to feeding on specific species of pine, suggesting they may represent distinct evolutionary lineages in the early stages of becoming separate species.

A bird that I have only heard or seen briefly seen in the past. I was lucky enough to have a small group of these interesting birds perch in a low tree last week and give me a great opportunity to photograph them.

Interior designers often talk about sightlines. They're the natural path your eye travels when you enter or move through a room.

Most people never think about this consciously, but they feel it. Art placed directly in a sightline changes a room immediately.

Placement is as intentional as the work itself.

From last weeks birding time in Eastern Washington.

Lazuli Bunting, Paserina amoena.
Umtanum Creek Recreation Site, Ellensburg, Washington, USA.

Found in shrubby habitats and open woodlands of the western United States and southern Canada, these buntings migrate to Mexico for the winter. Despite their delicate appearance, male Lazuli Buntings are fiercely territorial and use their sweet, warbling songs to defend breeding territories and attract mates. Interestingly, younger males often adopt less conspicuous plumage and may settle near older, dominant males, sometimes gaining unexpected breeding opportunities through this subtle strategy.
