At first, that can feel like freedom, discovery, and escape. But after enough trips, the difference becomes clear. It is not always discovery. Often, it is access.

Some men say they love Pattaya.

But listen closely, and sometimes the defence sounds less like love for Thailand and more like rage at where they came from.

Britain is finished.
America is broken.
The West is lost.
Western women are impossible.
The family does not care.

Maybe Pattaya is not just escape.

Maybe for some men, it becomes revenge, proof, exile, and a warmer place to carry an old wound.

Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting somebody else to die.

A tale of two Pattayas.

There are two Pattayas.

One is morning walks, coffee in Jomtien, cheap food, sea air, routine, and older men building a simple life that works.

The other is late nights, drink, paid attention, false intimacy, blurred mornings, and men pretending escape is freedom.

Same streets. Same bars. Same beach.

But not the same man.

Pattaya is never just good or bad. It becomes whatever part of the man it feeds.

Bring discipline and it can become a life. Bring loneliness, denial and hunger, and it can become a trap.

Why do some men defend Pattaya so hard?

Sometimes it is not really about Pattaya.

It may be about defending a holiday, a woman, a decision, a dream, an escape route, or an identity they have built around the place.

For some men, Pattaya becomes the one place where they feel they finally belong. But feeling accepted is not always the same as being rooted.

You can live somewhere for years, spend money there, build routines there, even marry there — and still remain conditional.

A guest. A foreigner. A man whose life there depends on rules, visas, money, and permission.

This is not about attacking Pattaya.

It is about asking why some men react so strongly when the fantasy is questioned.

Stray dogs roam freely around the hills above Pattaya, especially near the famous Pattaya City Sign and the viewpoint trails. It might seem like a peaceful place for a sunset walk or photo — but don’t let your guard down. These packs can be intimidating, especially if you're walking alone.

Locals know the risk. Tourists often don’t.

This isn’t just a viewpoint — it’s a territory.

Sept 2005. Soi 13/4 When Pattaya was a live and kicking... quite often stop off in the Kittens gogo never stayed in the Penthouse. I remember at the time they had a service where they would pick you up from the airport with two kittens in the back :-)

This is my closing short on Pattaya for now.

After the last trip, I finally understand the stages more clearly:

Holiday Mode → Life-Abroad Mode → Settlement Mode

A holiday only has to work for a short time. It is built around the peak.

Life-Abroad Mode is different. It has to survive the ordinary days — the room, the routine, the baseline, the quiet hours, and whether life abroad can actually hold once the excitement fades.

Settlement Mode is another step again. That is where life abroad becomes a real long-term structure.

For me, the truth is simple: I have not made it past Life-Abroad Mode. Not yet.

So I’m stepping away from Pattaya for now.

Not bitter. Not defeated. Just clearer.

Sept 2005. The infamous Blue Mountain area of Sihanoukville. Back then in both Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville a lot of Vietnamese girls working these places.
