In what other city in the world can you travel between two continents every day on your way to work or school and witness this unique view? ⛴️

Taking a ferry in Istanbul isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s a city ritual in itself. The moment you step onto the pier, the suffocating chaos of the metropolis is left behind. The wind hitting your face, the sound of the waves, and the nostalgic echo of the ferry whistle make up a shared symphony that Istanbulites listen to every day.

This short sea voyage has unwritten rules: That steeped tea in a tulip-shaped glass must be sipped, pieces of simit (Turkish bagel) must be skillfully thrown to the seagulls against the wind, and one must zone out for at least a few seconds while passing by the Maiden’s Tower.

Gliding over the sea from the rush of Europe to the serenity of Asia (or vice versa), these ferries keep not only Istanbul’s transportation but also its soul alive.

When you walk into a luxury cafe, a modern art gallery, or a famous brand’s boutique in Istanbul, you are not greeted by a security guard at the door, but probably by an orange tabby yawning in the window display. In this city, cats are the absolute rulers not only of the streets but also of the indoors.

If a cat falls asleep on the most comfortable velvet armchair of a third-wave coffee shop in Karaköy, no one sits at that table until the cat wakes up. Waiters serve orders by walking around it, and customers speak in whispers. This isn’t just a love for animals; it’s a silent pact of respect woven into the DNA of this city for centuries.

With its unique tolerance towards street animals, Istanbul is a city that lives not only with its history but also with its conscience. Amidst the luxury and glamour, the carefree sleep of our four-legged friends is actually the most beautiful and modern view of Istanbul.

We all know the epic tale of the conquest of Istanbul, but have you ever seen the main protagonist of the famous “moving ships overland” event up close? ⛓️

In 1453, the Byzantine Empire’s ultimate defensive move was to block the mouth of the Golden Horn with a colossal iron chain stretching from Galata to Sarayburnu. Floating on wooden pontoons and attached to giant towers at both ends, this chain was flawless enough to stop even the most powerful warships of the era. It was considered impassable.

However, Sultan Mehmed II had no intention of giving up. Since the Golden Horn was closed off by the chain, the fleet would cross over the land. More than 70 ships were slid over oiled logs in a single night down the steep hills from Tophane to Kasımpaşa, appearing in the waters of the Golden Horn behind the chain at the first light of dawn. This single move altered not just the fate of a city, but the course of world history.

So, what happened to that impenetrable chain?

This iconic Byzantine defense line is still among us today! If your path crosses the Harbiye Military Museum, the Beşiktaş Naval Museum, or the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, you can get close enough to almost touch this legendary chain, with each link weighing dozens of kilos. In Istanbul, history doesn’t just belong to the past; it continues to live in the corridors of its museums.

When you step through its doors, a colossal dome and centuries of serenity welcome you... The Süleymaniye Mosque is not just a place of worship, but one of the greatest architectural marvels of the 16th century.
While building this masterpiece, Mimar Sinan (Sinan the Architect) thought not only of aesthetics but also of hundreds of years into the future. The soot and spider webs that would inevitably form on the ceilings of this massive mosque—illuminated by hundreds of oil lamps—posed an impossible cleaning problem. Sinan’s solution was neither a chemical nor a machine; it was ostrich eggs brought all the way from Africa.
Strategically hung among the lamps, the liquid inside these eggs dried over time, emitting a special scent that humans couldn’t perceive, but which pests and spiders could never approach. This brilliant biological defense system worked flawlessly for 400 years.
Today, if you look up carefully at the chandeliers, you can still see some of those legendary blackened eggs that have succumbed to the weariness of time. Wherever you turn your head in Istanbul, a stroke of genius is hidden.
