Wandering up behind the historic Spice Bazaar in the historic district of Istanbul, you can find all sorts of alleyways and side streets to explore. Down one of these alleyways and up some stairs of a very old building there's an older gentleman with a set of keys. For 5 Turkish Lira (about $1.50) he will unlock the door to the roof and an amazing view of the city. With such a view, who can resist a selfie?

Ortaköy, Istanbul - Ortaköy is a small neighborhood on the European side of Istanbul. On Sundays they have a bazaar where people set up their stands to sell crafts, handmade goods and tourist trinkets. It's also famous for it's baked potatoes and waffles! The baked potatoes are huge and come topped with your choice of all sorts of toppings (hot dog slices, corn, olives, mushrooms, potato salad, bulgar salad, etc.). The waffles make for a great dessert and come topped with ice cream, fruit, nuts, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

This is a Han in Istanbul back behind the historic Spice Bazaar. Historically, Hans were places where travelers, students, teachers and tradesmen would stay - most were built with an open courtyard in the center to house the tenants animals. Today, many Hans from centuries ago can still be discovered hidden among Istanbul's urban sprawl. Now they are mostly used by workers and craftsmen. They have barbers, inexpensive restaurants, and tea shops to serve the workingman. This particular Han has a çaycı (tea seller) who makes his tea on the top floor! I imagine he sleeps well at night.

The Charles Bridge (Karlův most) street and the bell tower of St. Nicholas Church - Prague, Czech Republic. I grabbed this shot right before going left down a little side street and into an excellent Bagel shop. I'm still not sure what was better, the view or the bagels!

Built in 1664 along the bank of the Golden Horn, the Spice Bazaar (or Mısır Çarşısı in Turkish) is like a miniature version of the Grand Bazaar. While the rent prices for the vendors have driven prices up, it's still possible to find some great, local items such as Turkish delight, ceramics, copper wares and textiles. (Yes, even though it's called the "Spice Bazaar", they have a diverse selection!)

I've been wanting to get out and do some night photography for a while now and I finally got the chance! If you're not familiar with steel wool photography, this is what steel wool looks like when it is lit, spun around and shot with a long camera exposure (8 seconds). This is a composite shot I took on a beach at the Black Sea. I shot this on a tripod using 2 shots: one exposed for the milky way and one exposed for the steel wool. To help me find and shoot the Milky Way I used an app called Photopills.

Amsterdam in the Netherlands - this was not a city that was on my list to visit but I have to say that the canals you may have seen in a book or on TV are even better in person. The beautiful row houses, people riding their bikes and boats going up and down the water ways make for an exciting and picturesque visit. I know summer is a logical time to travel because of schedules, but try and travel in the fall or spring when the weather is perfect and the fares are cheaper!

It's been a while since my last post - I took a social media sabbatical :) I have a few new places to share though so I'll start it off with a shot from a beautiful (but very cold) day in Prague, Czech Republic along the Vltava River. If you ever get a chance to go, try to go during the winter and see the Christmas Markets. The Old Town Square gets lit up with lights and a giant Christmas tree and vendors sell hot apple cider, roasted Trdelník (cinnamon sugar doughnut-like creations), fantastic bratwurst and roast pork.
