Jiufen
Shoot during the pandemic.

I recently came across a group about Taiwanese traveling, which basically is for people to post their plan and ask for advices.
I dig a bit in, intrigued about what people wanna see in my home country, and found out that almost all people would include Jiufen as a must go in their plan.

It’s not such a surprise, due to the well known Spirit Away alike scenery. Yet it’s also subtle to see, how these crowded tourist sites we locals felt normal in it’s specialty and tend to avoid, could really be such a gem for foreigners to come travel from some land of far far away.

Anyways, it’s still an interesting place to explore with its gold mining history. I do, however, recommend staying one night to enjoy a meal with the lights up without crowd. For some who don’t wanna check out from the hotel in Taipei, Uber is also un option. It’s worth it!

Eslite Dunnan Store.

The previous 24-hour bookstore of Eslite, lights out after 31 years of operation because the lease has expires.

Apart from its value as a 24-hour bookstore, I felt a reading-friendly atmosphere in Dunnan Eslite which no other Eslite branch store had.

Here, you can randomly pick a book, sit on the floor, read it at your pace, maybe take a whole afternoon or a whole night, yet no-one will feel you’re weird, it's all so natural.

Even if you want to read a book that doesn’t have an unpacked one on the shelf, you can take it to the counter and open it; almost any book can be request this way, so far I haven't been rejected.

In my time as a student, Dunnan Eslite had partially fulfilled my need for reading. At those days while the time of schooling, part-time job, home teaching, and club classes had stuffed my schedule, my time window can never match the opening hours of most libraries and bookstores, except the 24-hour Eslite.

Eslite at midnight's is pretty quiet, barely have any distraction. Everyone here quietly searched for what they were looking for.

The advantage of the big consortium owned bookstores is that they rarely missed new books, even some unpopular art and design-related books can be seen; yet the disadvantage is that some books will be screened out due to standpoint reasons.
But as the reading culture declines, it's not as easy to maintain such a public reading sphere. And as I grow up, I begin to find that Eslite's compound business model is very interesting.

Let’s just say, how many people out of all, went there just to pretend they love books?
