Flashback to 2018. Back then, I was working with Code for Africa, through Code for Tanzania, the local arm here.

One of the projects I got to be part of was a system built to collect air pollution data, low-cost, customizable units deployed across a number of major cities in Africa. The goal wasn’t just measurement for its own sake. It was giving policymakers and city planners real data to work with, the kind of information that actually shapes decisions about how a city grows.

Emmanuel Evance led that project. These particular images are from a session where we brought the technology to school students, not to solve pollution outright, but to show young minds what’s actually possible when you point technology at a real problem.

I’ve since moved on from the company, but I have no doubt the project’s impact outlived my time there.

K15’s story with Necta doesn’t have a clean beginning, it goes back years, to when she was still at university. We’ve been telling pieces of her story since then, and we’re not close to done.

Here’s what we’ve learned in that time: when you book a session with Necta, come prepared. Whatever extra mile you’re planning to go, she’s already planning to go one further.

This one came together the day before, no long lead time, no overthinking it. Just an outdoor session and two people who know how to work fast when the light’s right.

2022. Forodhani. That’s it, that’s the whole origin story.

We met Sarah there, clicked instantly the way you sometimes do with a stranger, and by the next day we were already shooting together with NainkwaArt. No plan, no brief, just two people who’d decided the day before that this should happen.

We’ve sat on these for years. Seemed right to finally let them out while we’re back in Zanzibar this week.

We’ve known Mecktilder for years now, back before “youth in mining” was a sentence people said out loud together. She’s spent that time becoming one of the sharpest voices on the continent for it, Africa Mining Strategist, Pit to Policy, the kind of resume that reads like she’s been in every room where the sector actually gets decided.

She came in for a quick ReLight session. Before she left, we asked her one question: why is it important for the youth to get involved in the mining sector?

She didn’t hesitate. Her answer wasn’t about opportunity or ambition. It was about something a lot more urgent than that.

Yesterday it was Brenda (Brenda ). Today it’s Simon (Simon Mtabazi ). If you caught both posts, you’ll know exactly why that’s not a coincidence we’re letting slide by quietly.

Simon’s been part of the K15 story for years now, projects together, events where he’s shown up as organizer, sponsor, speaker, sometimes all three in the same day. It’s actually through him that we met Brenda. We photographed them through her pregnancy, then again when their baby arrived. This corporate portrait session was shot last year, but pulling it out today, right after Brenda’s ReLight feature, felt like the right kind of full circle.

Brenda-Jasmine Jerome is someone we've worked alongside for years now, across a number of projects, including our time together at Girl Effect. This particular shoot had been on the calendar for months, a birthday session we kept meaning to get to, and finally did.

While she was here, we sat her down for ReLight and asked her one question. What does growing up actually mean?

Mariam’s been in front of our lens more times than we can count at this point. Shop content, events, the kind of shoots where she’s just... there, part of the day rather than the subject of it.

This time was different. She walked into the studio with one job for us: give her the corporate look. No event around it, no shop backdrop. Just her, and the version of herself she needed for the boardroom.

We think we delivered. She’ll be the judge of that.

Every new photographer eventually asks the same question. What should my niche be?

Today’s desk video is about why that question is wrong, at least early on. Most advice tells you to pick a niche and specialize fast. We think that’s backwards, and there’s a second, less popular reason why picking based on “what you love” might not even be the right approach once you actually get there.
