Geneva’s modernist Hotel du Rhône opened in 1950 and had the unique honor of being the first hotel to be built in Europe after World War II, coinciding with the arrival of the United Nations in this chic Swiss city. Exactly 50 years later, it joined the Mandarin Oriental family, and it still showcases the impeccable service that has made it a favorite for generations. The guest rooms are stylish but unfussy, with views out over the river, the garden, or the mountains beyond, and the dining options are totally unexpected. In place of some staid hotel brasseries, you’ll find the sunny Peruvian spot Yakumanka, headed up by Gastón Acurio’s former right-hand man Daniel Galvez Estrada, and this October, the property added Sachi, a new omakase restaurant by chef Mitsuru Tsukada.
