Meta and Instagram are once again deleting the images I share from journalists and Palestinian civilians in Gaza being killed by the State of Israel. This time, the platform claims that by sharing images of children killed by the Israeli fascist regime, I posted child sexual abuse material. That is an extremely serious, grotesque and disgusting accusation. It fills me with revulsion.

Israel is killing children. If there is any violence here that is inhuman, monstrous, vile and cowardly, it is the violence Israel inflicts by killing children every single day.

Journalists, meanwhile, seem to have grown accustomed to it. Who still hears about groups of journalists organizing themselves, tired of waiting for permission to enter Gaza? That has simply disappeared.

Meta is complicit with this genocide. By censoring this kind of documentation, it contributes to a world in which fewer and fewer records of what is happening in Gaza can be seen. It is complicit in the silence imposed on the victims and in the erasure of the memory of what is happening there.

Russian chauvinism against Ukraine exists and has always existed. The Ukrainian struggle to free itself from this domination has passed through different moments, political experiences and ideologies.

This struggle needs to be discussed with historical rigor, because resistance to Russian chauvinism, by itself, can never absolve every ideology that presented itself as liberating. At different moments, this process led sectors of Ukrainian nationalism to irreparable historical crimes, including the murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

Ivan Dziuba is one of the most emblematic representatives of another Ukrainian tradition of resistance to Russian chauvinism. A Marxist, Leninist and critic of Soviet Russification, he confronted this problem from within the Soviet Union itself. His attempt was to make valid, within the communist promise of national liberation, Ukraine’s right to exist with political, cultural and historical autonomy.

It is worth reading.

Há neste momento uma tensão diplomática entre Ucrânia e Polônia que já custou a Zelensky a maior honraria militar polonesa que havia sido concedida a ele. O conflito gira em torno da memória da OUN e da UPA, dois nomes centrais na história do nacionalismo ucraniano.

A Ucrânia trouxe de Luxemburgo os restos mortais de Andrii Melnyk e de sua mulher, Sofiia Fedak-Melnyk. Melnyk foi coronel do Exército da República Popular Ucraniana e depois se tornou líder da Organização dos Nacionalistas Ucranianos, a OUN.

Em Lviv, há pichações assinadas pelo grupo de extrema direita Centuria celebrando o retorno dos restos mortais dos chamados “heróis da OUN-UPA”.

Kyiv apresenta essa repatriação como parte da construção de um panteão nacional, reunindo figuras vistas na Ucrânia como importantes na luta pela independência. Para a Polônia, o assunto é muito mais sensível. Quando aparecem nomes ligados à OUN, à UPA ou ao nacionalismo ucraniano armado, a memória polonesa volta imediatamente aos massacres de civis poloneses na Volínia e na Galícia Oriental durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Estou de volta à Ucrânia, agora em Lviv, e adoro caminhar por essa cidade. Eu quase sempre fico no mesmo hotel quando venho para cá. É um hotel simples, sem nada muito especial, com duas vantagens bem concretas: a localização e o preço.

Mas caminhar por Lviv é sempre uma experiência curiosa. A cidade parece guardar história em cada esquina. Você passa por uma rua qualquer, levanta um pouco o olhar e encontra uma placa, uma escultura, um nome, uma memória que ajuda a entender melhor o país inteiro.

Para mim, Lviv é uma das cidades ucranianas onde a tensão entre passado, presente e futuro aparece com mais força. Aqui, a história não está apenas nos museus. Ela está nas fachadas, nas igrejas, nas praças, nos monumentos, nos nomes das ruas e na forma como a cidade organiza sua própria memória.

Bem ao lado do hotel onde estou hospedado, existem três esculturas que eu nunca tinha reparado antes. Elas representam três personagens muito importantes para a formação do nacionalismo ucraniano.

E o nacionalismo ucraniano está hoje no centro do conflito que atravessa este país. Identidade, língua, caráter, território, história, memória, imaginário político, tudo passa por essa disputa. Então vou mostrar alguns desses personagens e explicar por que eles continuam importantes para entender a Ucrânia de hoje.
