Can you believe it?? Only 1.5 months left to the year's end -
I am happy (and very relieved) to share that I am near the finish line with my 2018 calendars. For the coming year, I arranged some of my favorite photos taken in Uganda into a 12-month calendar.

Half of the proceeds of this calendar to Wildlife Conservation Society, which has a chapter operating in Uganda.

I would be hugely grateful if you are interested in ordering one. Each calendar is $20 if you message me by this Friday, Nov. 17. After Nov. 17, each calendar is $25.

Each calendar page will have 3-4 photos in high-quality print on 12x12-inch gloss paper. The last image previews the large image that featured on each month.

Please feel free to share if you feel compelled!

I did not even realize that Goliath Herons, the largest heron species in the world, could be seen at Lake Mburo. These giants range from 3.9 to 5 ft tall, weighing 8.8-11 pounds (source: Wikipedia). Compare its size to the African Jacana (look down at its feet to see the other bird!)

I couldn't believe this crazy looking dinosaur was just hanging out in a swamp!!! Shoebills, appropriately named for their distinctive bill shape, are sometimes called "shoebill storks" because of their stork-like stature. DNA studies find that they are actually most closely related to the Pelecanus family (pelicans), and the hamerkop, which is another unique-looking wading bird found in Africa (Thanks Wikipedia!). Mabamba Swamp I've been told is one of the few places to reliably see shoebills in the wild, and I was not disappointed. What a joy to watch this beautiful creature moving so slowly, stiffly, silently, like the relic of a prehistoric time that it is.

Water lilies are an invasive species introduced to Africa from North America. Herbert told me that some people grow them to discourage birds that feed on fish from hunting, but the invasive plant has caused unintended ecological problems and the clogging of waterways.

However, the African Jacana, which is adapted to wade atop floating vegetation, seems to find itself at home with the non-native lilies. Notice the long claws in the second photo which help the jacana wade.

I was so happy to finally visit Mabamba Swamp, which had been long recommended by my guide and friend Herbert. Many photos of the wonderful bird life to be posted - starting with the lovely Malachite Kingfisher. Actually one of Herbert's favorite bird species!

It's been a while since I took a photo I am really happy with - but it happened this past Sunday, June 25th! This juvenile tree swallow was helpful by opening its mouth whenever it saw mom and dad, giving me a head's up when to press the shutter. I did see another hungry mouth peek out from inside the hole, but its sibling wouldn't budge. This feeding process went on for several minutes, and I imagine much longer than I stood watching. I wonder how long the strongest juvenile was fed while the other juveniles inside went hungry.

Happy Father's Day to the dads in every species. 🌎 Photo of my fave American Avocet couple on April 7, 2017, with Dad sitting on the nest and Mom looking alert. This morning I went to San Joaquin WS for the first time in almost 2 months, hoping to see me some avocet youngsters. I did not :( but I did see some other juvenile birds so that was good. I wonder what happened to this avocet pair's clutch.

OC birders, does this stream look familiar? Yes, it is the stream that custom-built in her backyard. and I were birding at a park on Saturday morning, where we serendipitously met Terry. She invited us over to her home and showed us her beeeeautiful native plant and bird-friendly backyard. In the middle of our conversation, a juvenile male Blue Grosbeak flew into the yard - a life bird for all of us! Shown here with the plainer female House Finch in the background for comparison. What an exciting weekend.

It took a lot of pursuing but I finally got a decent Great Tit picture in Japan
