The last remnants of light gently caressed the Earth and dressed the sky in faint hues of blue and magenta.

His golden coat reflected the colour of the sun that had just set as he lay atop a large granite hill, overseeing the territory he has been master of for over a year now.

A kingdom he has claimed and holds with brutal power.

This is Shiv. A fierce, untamed and raw spirit wrapped in a magnificent form and colours of gold, black and white.

This encounter with a Black Back will be one I shall remember so vividly. My heart beats faster as a physical response, my eyes widen as I remember watching his every single move and action. Observing so that I could predict. He came storming out of the nearby forest and into the field of nettles that the rest of his family rested and groomed in, including the Silverback. His explosive power, deep booming barks took us all by surprise as he appeared seemingly out of nowhere. We did not move a muscle as the came closer before standing stock still, breathing heavily and fast. A female gorilla walked up to the fiery male and gently touched his shoulder as she walked past. And he calmed down. My body was buzzing with adrenaline, and I’m sure he could hear my heart and see the rounds of my eyes as I looked no where else but at this powerful creature. One of nature’s sweetest sounds - a White Rhino calf communicating with its mother.

It’s a sound that simultaneously floods my heart with love, while feeling like it is breaking. A sound that supports its vulnerability.

Calling to its mother that was only mere meters away, very relaxed and eating grass - which you can hear - the calf proceeded to trot up to its mother before they disappeared into thick bushes together.

Her eyes and ears are captivated and drawn to every little movement and sound. But that is the curious nature of a Leopard cub.

Safe in the territory held by her mother, and with her company within a moments reach, this little female explores a world of sight, smell and sound with a playful energy that dances around her.

In a still moment amongst the lively, she sits quietly.
She looks up.
A brief moment of her life made lasting in a story this image creates.

Leopard vs. Full-Grown Impala Ram - Raw Power in the Wild

The Nkoveni female, and Leopardess that is 13 years old, shows incredible strength, skill, and experience as she not only hunted and kill a fully-grown Impala ram, but as you can see if this video, she drags her bounty with what looks like effortless strength.

She weights barely half of what the ram does - yet she drags him through the bush with the strength of an animal who has survived more than a decade in the wild.

While relocating her kill is not effortless for her, her age has sharpened her mastery and determination.

My guest and I were on our afternoon game drive when we stopped by a herd of Elephant drinking in the river. “Can you see the really young Elephant calf?” I asked my guest. There in the river was an Elephant calf that was less than a month old, happily enjoying the refreshing waters of the river! With it being so young though, it would trip over its feet, fall into the water as it stumbled over a dip in the sand, and just generally have a bit of a harder time getting its legs and trunk to work in a coordinated fashion! It’s mother, ever attentive, used her trunk, legs and feet to try help her wobbly calf. This was such a beautiful moment to witness and capture. And now, share with you.
