"The Newport Tower"
Newport, RI
August 24, 2026

From "Newport History":

In Newport, Rhode Island, there is a ruined tower that for more than a century and- a-half has been the object of heated debate. Locally the tower is known as "the Old Stone Mill," and the building was in fact in use as a mill in 1677 when the first known written reference to it was made. For a mill, however, it has an extremely unusual structure, and nothing certain is known about its original construction. Over time it has been said to have been originally a round church, a watch-tower, a warehouse, a market hall, a lighthouse-tower, an astronomical calendar, and an architectural folly. It has been suggested at various times that it was built by Nordic Vikings, Irish monks, Welshmen, Portuguese explorers, or Dutch or English settlers. In recent years, a small team of Nordic researchers has tried to clear up the question of the origins of the tower.

I received my very own copy of Mr. Perron's and Carlene Harris, with Andrea Perron as a contributing editor; "Being Perronormal A Memoir: Short Stories From a Ling Life". I went with the full color hardcover edition. It is absolutely beautiful. I flipped through it many times but have not started diving into it yet. But I can say this, the labor of love that went into this book is certainly within the pages. As a Dad, this is the ultimate tribute. The book is filled with personal photos of the family both old and recent and really has the appearance of being welcomed into the Perron family. You'll find my photo of the Farmhouse within it's pages as well as the Farmhouse throughout the years the Perron family lived there. I never got to meet him but I am looking forward to hear directly from the man himself. Major Congratulations Carlene & Andrea! Link in the comments for purchase.
