Hey everyone
Today’s photo has a little story. The drone I use has a high-quality camera that allows me to capture and print the images I want. Also, I typically fly above rugged, remote terrain; so, I have a quality camera that could be several hundred feet in the air, and maybe ½ mile away over rugged terrain!! There are instances that if the drone dropped, recovery would be difficult if not impossible.
The other day, the late afternoon clouds were looking promising, so I took the drone out over some cool canyons. As I was flying, just before sunset, the clouds were building and the sunset colors started to show nicely. At one point I noticed the battery was getting low, so I started bringing the drone back. However, the color in the skies just kept getting better and better, so I kept turning it around to grab a composition as I slowly brought it back to the landing site. Pretty soon the sky just exploded in 360 degrees of awesome color!!
That was about the time my controller started beeping “dangerously low battery”. I quickly brought the drone down and rushed to set my normal camera up on a tripod. As soon as that camera was up, I was hit with a huge gust as a windstorm with some rain descended on the area. The drone was literally being blown around on the ground.. While I was rushing to grab it I was worried the tripod was going to fall over, so had to secure it also.
I realized afterwards that if I had brought the drone down only few minutes later, it most likely would have blown away! Fortunately, there was no damage to either camera.
Wow – I really need to watch what I am doing and start learning a few lessons. Anyway here is an image from that evening, I am not sure it was worth all the excitement - but I like it.
