Expectations ➡️ Reality

Kids are funny, one minute they’re smiling, the next they’re upset about the shirt they have to wear. It’s okay if your littles aren’t feeling pictures at the start of the session! Everything is new, I’m new, and they’re being told they have to stay still and look at the weird lady with a camera and smile. So I do a few things to help them be more comfortable, so we can get shots like the first on this post:

✨ introduce myself down at their level and ask a few questions. What do they like, are they excited, what’s their favorite dinosaur? Whatever seems appropriate in the moment so they know they’re an important part of this time together (unless it makes them more upset, then I just let them come to me when they’re ready).

✨ start off with prompts that play with mom and dad, not looking at me and smiling. Whether it’s walking hand in hand and swinging, maybe tickling each other, or just letting them cuddle with the parents, I want to put them in their safe space, which is usually with mom or dad.

✨ Snacks, toys, or bubbles. I’ll often tell families with young children to bring some of their favorite toys and snacks. Who can be upset when they have snacks?

✨ Capture these moments too. This is the stage of life they’re in, and it’s worth celebrating and capturing.
