Smooth-billed Ani that I photographed on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. These birds are not naturally native to the Galapagos. They were intentionally imported and released. They are now in direct competition with endemic species and causing problems.

Meet the San Cristobal lava lizard. There are lave lizard populations on almost all of the Galápagos Islands. The San Cristobal lave lizard has now been classified as a unique species from all of the other populations. The island of San Cristobal is the eastern most and oldest in the Galapagos archipelago. That means its terrestrial species of animals have been isolated the longest from those on the other islands.

We visited the El Chato Ranch located in the highlands on island of Santa Cruz. The first wildlife sightings on the drive in was a huge Galapagos tortoise on the side of the road. We saw numerous tortoises as we hiked around the various areas of the ranch. This is an image of one of them that was grazing.
