"Lake Tahoe After Storm"

During the kids' spring break, I booked a few days to stay in Yosemite Valley but a major storm was forecast so I ended up postponing our visit to later in the week then ended up going to South Lake Tahoe the day after the storm passed. Honestly, my photographer mindset would have loved to photograph the sh*ttiest weather possible but my kids would have been miserable so I did the right thing here. But it made me sick to my stomach to disappoint my kids with potentially just sitting at home all week with nothing to do so we did the last minute excursion to Tahoe. My daughter got to play in the snow for the first time and my son enjoyed it as well.

Visiting Montreal was an interesting experience. I probably should have done some more basic research ahead of time, but I didn't realize it was the 8th most populated city in North America until Googling it while standing atop Mont Royal Park looking at the downtown skyline. I'll just say that driving here is a nightmare between road construction on almost every street, potholes, vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Like any big city, there are areas with a lot of graffiti and grime. There are also really nice areas as well. It was fun to spend a few nights in Old Montreal and also explore Jean Talon Market. Most people seemed bi-lingual here even if French was their first language. Whereas in Quebec City it's not uncommon to communicate with French-only speakers. I'm not sure if I'd visit Montreal again as big cities aren't really my thing but I'm glad that we did spend time here on this trip.

After spending three nights in Bar Harbor, Maine, we moved onto Quebec City for another three nights. I didn't photograph that much as I wasn't feeling well and had previously photographed a decade ago when I was working for Backroads but my wife and kids hadn't been to Quebec so it was fun.

On my previous visit, I remember the Backroads van driving to Quebec City from Île d'Orléans and seeing Montmorency Falls from the highway. It's a massive waterfall and hard to miss. It wasn't part of the itinerary so this time I made sure to visit. I even went up to the edge of falls with rain gear on (you can see this in the foreground). Some fly fisherman somehow was fishing for an hour under all that water spray. Crazy.

Acadia National Park in Maine, had long been on my bucket list. What an incredible place! I didn't photograph that much but really enjoyed it here despite warmer than expected weather. I reserved tickets too late for Cadillac Mountain to see sunrise but it was still beautiful by mid-morning.

Having Bar Harbor just outside the park was nice as well despite the large amounts of people. Most national parks have utterly abysmal food if you can even call it that (ahem Yellowstone, Yosemite) so it's nice to actually be able to eat a good meal while exploring the park.

I want to revisit Acadia during fall season sometime in the future.

After a few days on Cape Cod, we moved onto Rockport for a night which is located on the tip of Cape Ann. This was about halfway to Bar Harbor / Acadia NP which helped break up the long drive. I stopped here for lunch previously in 2019 during a fall color photo trip so I knew it would be place that the family would like as well. The main attraction photographically is the old fishing shack, Motif Number 1.

P.S. if you like lobster then go to Roy Moore. Best testing lobster I had all trip out of a number of places we ordered it.

I just returned from a 16-day trip to the East Coast & Quebec. The first few days of the trip were spent on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The topography isn't photogenic in the way that the west coast is but my approach to photography is more about what the images represent. Cape Cod has an understated beauty to it and we had a great time there.

You might also recognize the lighthouse (Nauset Light) from the Cape Cod potato chips packaging.

Half Dome & Sentinel Meadow - Yosemite National Park

The media hype train is publishing stories non-stop about Memorial Day traffic in Yosemite. Shocking! I shot this photo on a Tuesday in April and it wasn’t busy at all. In the travel industry it’s referred to as “shoulder season”.

Upper Yosemite Falls last month from Cook's Meadow. It had been years since I had photographed Yosemite in the middle of spring so it was fun to take my kids to the big waterfalls during Spring Break. It wasn't that busy either until later in the week when we were leaving, which was a pleasant surprise.

Lake Tahoe Panoramic a few weeks ago, two days after a spring snowstorm. My daughter had never seen snow in-person before so we went during the kid's spring break before spending the rest of the week in Yosemite.
