Yaël Photography

Yaël Photography Specialize in conceptual portraits, and offers traditional family and senior photo sessions. Thanks for your interest in my photography!

My name is Yael DeFaye, I was born in Paris and spent my first 29 years in Europe. I’ve traveled to different continents and have enjoyed learning from different cultures and people. At the end of 2006, I arrived in the San Luis Valley, Colorado with my little family that has since grown. I became a US citizen in April 2012. The part that may interest you the most might be my passion in photograph

y. I bought my first digital camera at the beginning of the century while traveling in Hong Kong, and in 2007 I bought my first DSLR. I still remember the first time I brought the camera in front of me and looked through the viewfinder. I have spent years learning photography with lots of failures and some great successes. With that, I started teaching photography to the local community and offered different classes and workshops. Feel free to look at my photography and visit my store to acquire the prints in the different format going from canvas to metal. I enjoy photographing landscapes, architecture, wildlife as well as creating environmental portraits and when the occasion arise I offer senior, family, wedding and other events/subject photo sessions.

It had been far too long since my friend Bob and I hit the trail together. We decided on Penitente Canyon, a place that never seems to lose its magic, no matter how many times you navigate its paths.

This trip wasn't about "conquering" a trail or rushing to a summit. I wanted to move slowly. I wanted to simply savor the friendship and the rhythm of the walk. I found myself getting lost in the interplay of light and texture against the rock, taking intentional pauses to breathe it all in before even thinking about capturing the view.

Being back there brought a flood of memories. The last time I stood among these formations, my children were small—full of that restless, wandering energy of childhood. Now, the house is changing. My youngest is preparing for college, and the "busy years" of hands-on parenting are shifting into something new.

It’s easy to feel a sense of loss when things change so quickly, but standing in the canyon, I felt a different perspective:

Life isn't moving toward an end; it is moving toward a rebirth.

As one season of life closes, another is blooming. It’s a reminder that while time moves fast, the beauty lies in how we evolve alongside it.

Today was a reminder that nature doesn't need vibrant colors to be spectacular. I spent the afternoon capturing the macro side of a dry winter, and the light on the textures caught me completely off guard.

We often talk about settings and gear, but the physical setup was the hardest part today. Getting close enough for a crisp macro shot while respecting the environment is a balancing act. One wrong move and the composition is ruined or the subject is disturbed.

It makes me wonder, how many "small things" have I walked past because I wasn't looking close enough?

This little explorer was sticking close to the shore today, basking in the sun and checking out every corner of the lake! ☀️🦆 It was a sweet moment, letting people enjoy its presence... until "too close" became too close, and it zipped back to its parents! It turned into a tiny, feathered torpedo the moment it felt uneasy. What an adventurer!

Sometimes a delayed trip is a blessing in disguise. My friend Bob and I were rewarded with a stunning day on Del Norte Peak. The light was incredible and the views were even better. We saw vibrant red aspens and these absolutely majestic clouds. So grateful for days spent in the peaceful, breathtaking beauty of nature.

Who says you can't shoot landscapes with a super telephoto lens? I spent the day doing just that, and I'm loving the results. The clouds were incredible and that last bit of summer sunset light made everything look even better. It's a fun challenge to see the world from a different perspective. Hope you enjoy these shots!

Made a quick stop at ARTfeast in Alamosa! It was great catching up with friends and seeing all the amazing local art. I especially loved this painting of a griffin-like beast—it was the perfect mix of fantasy and art, which is right up my alley. Wish I could have stayed longer, but I was on my way to Smith Reservoir.

Took my kid to the Wild West Border Warz this weekend. We loved sharing the camera and getting a close-up look at all the amazing custom cars and bikes. It's so cool to see the passion and hard work people put into their rides. Definitely a great memory!

Yesterday was a great day for birding and photography at Smith Reservoir in Blanca! I joined the amazing teams from San Luis Valley Great Outdoors and Bird of the San Luis Valley to practice with my super telephoto lens. I learned so much about different bird species and loved getting to meet Jesse and Kim. Big thanks for sharing your expertise and helping me open my mind to new things in nature.

I'm still learning to identify all the birds, so if you're an expert, feel free to drop some IDs in the comments!

The beginning of the end is here. My youngest is a senior now, growing up at a startling speed, and I am the one with the camera. She always wants a serious face, but I manage to steal a few smiles, and those are the ones I cherish most. I'll continue capturing these precious moments, keeping them close as the years unfold.

Dream Shoot Come True! 📸✨

Years in the making, and we finally did it! My amazing friend and her daughter joined me for a long-awaited photoshoot adventure to some stunning waterfalls. (Confession: I definitely need to up my hiking game to keep pace with these two! 😅)

Things got a little wet with my 24-70mm, so I swapped to the 70-200mm, and what a game-changer! No more constant lens cleaning – just pure shooting bliss. So incredibly happy we made this happen. It wasn't the exact waterfall I'd envisioned, but honestly, the results speak for themselves! So worth it.
