This photo started as an accident.

While styling a different shot I accidently pressed the trigger while my hand was still in the frame. I was about to delete the photo but then took a second to look at it, realizing that it was actually kind of pretty.

A bit of action to help tell the story of reaching for that first sip of coffee in the morning. A ritual many of us can relate to.

I see a lot of motion blur like this in hospitality and interiors photography. Food photography is typically very sharp and in focus, but I think motion blur has its place here too when the narrative calls for it.

Come with me to a full day menu shoot in Albany, NY!

This was SUCH a fun day working with the team at Druthers to shoot their new menu.

Knowing there would be a lot of cheese, salad dressings, glazes and burgers, I organized the shot list so that we were shooting a couple items from each section of the menu at a time. After shooting 3 salads, 2 appetizers, and a sandwich I would take some group photos and stage the table to look as if people were eating there. Once the food was no longer camera ready we moved on to the next section, rinsing and repeating this process all day long.

All said and done, we spent 8 hours shooting 40+ menu items. The day required constant quick decision making, some troubleshooting and a whole lot of creativity. By the end we were tired and fulfilled. There’s nothing better than wrapping a shoot day and having your client say “I’m SO happy with everything!”

I recently listened to on The Portrait System podcast and my ears perked up when I heard her use the phrase “created light” in place of artificial light.

Sometimes artificial light can get a bad rap. People think it will look fake or that artificial light won’t flatter a subject like natural light can. I know this isn't the case, and that artificial light can look natural if you know what you’re doing, but not everyone is the same way.

I love how created light sounds over artificial light. Created light sounds intentional and planned out. It implies that there’s a creative vision that can only be achieved with well thought out lighting and the skills to execute it. Created light is creative light.

So excuse me while I remove “artificial light” from my vocabulary and only use “created light” moving forward. ✨

Tasting notes series from my latest with 🍒🍷🍉

For our spring shoot we wanted images that felt light, airy, and like a breath of fresh air after a long winter. I knew texture and light would be key here, as they always are, but I wanted the viewer to look at these photos and picture themselves sipping on a glass under a breezy tree.

I started with a neutral surface and backdrop before adding in the linen draping and my nanlite for a dappled shadow. An additional key light was used to light the can and glassware, and the whole image was warmed up a touch in post for that spring time feel.

These images are the reflection of strong creative direction with a little “trust the process” thrown in for good measure. ✨
