Change is certain.
The shift in seasons, the new stages of life. As we say goodbye to summer and usher in another school year I can’t help but feel a little confused.
How did we get here? How has time truly flown at this pace? Am I soaking in the things that matter?
If I am honest, I can say this was a challenging summer. I work a lot. 60 hours a week minimum. The kids are home of course and with four of them and no drivers quite yet, we had about 10-20 activity commitments a week. So I wasn’t able to give them all I had. I have been treading water. It was physically, mentally and emotionally challenging.
So I could get weighed down by this feeling of failure or lack of time. I could let the exhausted mindset take over.
Or.
I can allow the change that this week naturally brings to also be a pivot point.
A pivot to invest in something beyond work(which I do like so very much) and even beyond motherhood (a role I adore and the people I adore most).
More intentional use of the small in between moments, (stop mindless scrolling).
Move. My back injury created a new to be situation where I have been severely limited. I can’t run or lift. But I can walk and do gentle stretching. It is not all or nothing. Small movements count.
Be gentle with myself. I have had such high expectations for my productivity for so long. I am admittedly burnt out. I am human and carrying much, it is ok to acknowledge I need a season of more intentional rest- despite a current life that allows for little of this- I can carve out more.
Connection. I am an extravert and yet have put friendships to the wayside lately. It has impacted my heart. We need community beyond quick conversations at the sports events.
It isn’t honorable to completely betray myself and ignore my needs for the sake of my kids. Balance. Living out boundaries, and showing them the importance of caring for my own mental, emotional and physical health is far more important. I lost sight of that truth the last few years and it has clouded some of my joy.
Change is coming. It won’t be immediate but I see now shifts need to happen and while I do not know the details, the sense and commitment to it is enough.
