Side of I-25, a mile or two south of Bernalillo.

My image of the Supermoon is probably the one photograph of mine that required the most planning.

Knowing a Supermoon would be rising to the east on August 30, 2023, I decided to try to capture the event. I wanted to create a forced-perspective image with something interesting in the foreground. One day, while driving east through Albuquerque toward Sandia Crest, it occurred to me that an interesting composition might be to photograph the moon as it rose behind the complex antenna farm atop the crest.

Using the PhotoPills app, I calculated where I would need to position myself and when the moon would be at the right elevation relative to the crest. A few days beforehand, I drove to the general location just off I-25 near Bernalillo. Using PhotoPills? augmented-reality mode, I refined the camera position and took some test shots to determine the focal length and composition I wanted. To further dial in my settings, the night before the Supermoon I photographed the moon from home at various focal lengths.

On the evening of the Supermoon, I arrived early, set up, and pre-focused and framed the camera on the antenna farm. I used a Canon R5 with an adapted Sigma 150?600mm Contemporary lens mounted on a sturdy tripod with a geared head. I settled on about 570mm, which I had found to be a particularly sharp focal length for that lens.

As the moon began rising behind the antennas, I took a series of photographs using a wired remote shutter release. I came away with several good frames, but this was my favorite.

An unexpected footnote to the story came a few months later: the company that installed many of the antennas on Sandia Crest somehow came across my photograph on Facebook. They contacted me and purchased a print, which now hangs in their offices in Texas.

Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park South Dakkota

This was taken in the Black Hills of South Dakota at Sylvan Lake inside Custer State Park. I had lived nearby when I was a teenager and used to enjoy hiking around the lake in the wintertime but never experienced it in the summer. This photo was taken in August of 2017 near sunset the same day as the total solar eclipse that traveled across the country which had its own spectacular beauty. The colors of the landscape and the serenity of the still waters in the photo allow me to relive many awesome memories of that day as well as past days. The lake remains just as beautiful every time I visit.

Piedra Lisa South Trailhead

I took this photograph in March, a couple of years ago, during one of my visits to Albuquerque, before I officially made the move here.
I loved exploring with my camera and discovering the unexpected colours, textures and beauty of a landscape so different from what I was used to.

West of Magdalena. Sonny

I started taking portraits of the interesting people I encountered when I moved to Magdalena, NM. One of these individuals was Sonny.

Having lived and worked most of my life in a big city, meeting and photographing a genuine cowboy like Sonny was a delightful experience.

Sonny is a true cowboy who lives on a thousand-acre ranch west of Magdalena. He ropes and brands cattle and participates in all the activities you would expect from a cowboy. I found it fascinating to talk with Sonny and spend that afternoon with him, gaining deeper insights into the lifestyle od a cowboy.

" Portrait Of A Lesser Goldfinch" taken in my backyard in La Luz, New mexico

I love photographing the birds that come to our feeders in the mountains of La Luz, NM but primarily because I'm looking for photos that are unusual or that show a bird's personality. While so many excellent photographers out there are getting amazing shots of birds in their natural environments, I am attempting to create a simple approach to bird photography where by cropping, and with the right lighting, I can create more intimacy with my subject.
