Remember Gloria Steinem she represents women. I was working in NYC at Ford Foundation one day when she came into the room. Time stopped and a remembrance overwhelmed all for what she stood for and who she was. Right there in her presence I was there,

This is where the story becomes real.

I’m creating my Queen of Swords costume at the San Juan College Makerspace, at home, and with help from local businesses bringing the vision to life.

For me, the Queen of Swords represents the hard-won path to authenticity, transformed into clarity, courage, and strength.

This fall, she travels with me on Templar Travel’s Pyramids of Mexico Experience, from ancient pyramid complexes to Día de los Mu***os in Mérida and Mexico City.

I’ll be sharing the journey from vision to costume along the way.

And this is only the beginning.

Following Navajo television and film production is my way of learning more about their culture and language as well as develop as a filmmaker and storyteller in the American Southwest. Congratulations 🎉 to filmmaker Peter Sands for winning 2 Emmy awards in June for Navajo Highways.

Navajo Highways follows a young girl named Sadie as she reconnects with her Navajo culture, language and family roots through puppetry and storytelling, teaching young viewers Diné Bizaad alongside cultural values. Visit the link in the post to see more.

Celebrating Navajo Highways success reinforces how much there is to learn about the Navajo Nation and way of life. As a filmmaker I am deeply interested in experiential storytelling among many ways of life in the Four Corners region.

Last month I travelled to Tsaile, AZ to shoot and produce a film about a traditional Dine elder transforming a 30 year cultural immersion hiking business into a place-based education camp for Native and non-Native youth.

My focus as a filmmaker shifted unexpectedly to what I observed and perceived as risks to her self-determination and livelihood since I first hiked the Canyon de Chelly with her in 2022. Since then an outsider she trusts is influencing her next chapter.

This was not the film I set out to make. I am taking the time to determine how to present what I filmed and perceived in a respectful and beneficial way. Stay tuned as this story unfolds.

For now, I’m viewing Navajo produced films and television on platforms like RedNationTV while educating myself to more closely with the Navajo Nation TV & Film Office processes that in part help filmmakers to navigate these and many other hurdles involved.

Finally, take some time to check out Navajo Highways and support native filmmakers in your communities ❤️

WINDOW ROCK — Navajo Highways, the Navajo-language children’s series created by filmmaker Pete Sands, took home two Emmy Awards at the 52nd Annual Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday,

Shaping the Future of Digital Media Education in San Juan County

San Juan College is hosting a public meeting on January 16 as part of New Mexico’s Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA) to review labor market data and ensure Career & Technical Education programs receive appropriate shares of Perkins Loan funding—like Digital Media, Arts & Design (DMAD)—align with real workforce needs in our region.

This is especially relevant for local digital media and marketing businesses, tourism and hospitality organizations, small business owners, and creative professionals.
