the taos welcome tree

Along with…. well, probably everyone… I was saddened to hear that the Taos welcome tree fell in high winds earlier this week. It was truly iconic, and I’ll miss seeing and photographing it.

A couple of my favorite photographs of the tree in recent years: the tree against a sky of red aurora in November of last year, and against a moody sky in the autumn of 2022.

clouds + dust

Early-season Milky Way near Chaco Canyon during the . and I saw this spot on the way to Chaco one afternoon and were determined to find it again on our way back… remarkably, we did - in the middle of the night!

Scattered clouds rolled across the sky as we photographed, and seemed to merge into the Milky Way’s galactic dust.

Last night, I was fortunate to attend a night sky event (thanks to for snagging reservations and inviting me!). The weather was flawless, the skies were dark… it was a perfect night.
