Albuquerque Street Scene of West Gold Avenue: 1900-2020

According to the historical markers, Gold Avenue was the “financial, professional, and governmental center of downtown Albuquerque.” Obviously since this photo was taken, many of the original buildings have either been replaced or added on to to have additional stories.

Orpheum Theater: 1912-2020
What is Orpheum Community Hub today used to be Orpheum Theater, one of New Mexico’s first movie theaters (according to their website). The building served for many functions over the years, but is now used for the performing arts and a studio.

First Congregational Church: 1892-2020

According to their website, this church was founded in 1880, but they didn’t acquire the land to build the church until 1881. In this photo, you can see damage on the building after a fire in 1892. Since then, the building has had many additions added on and is much bigger than the original 1880s building.

Albuquerque home: 1895-2020

The resident of this house was kind enough to let me take pictures of his house. I love the contrast of the blue and black and white in this photo, and if you look closely, you can see that a porch has been built since the first photo was taken.

Josefina’s Gate: 1956-2020

Josefina’s Old Gate is a sweet bed and breakfast and cafe with a long history in the Mesilla Plaza. It is located in an old adobe home with a foundation dating to the early 1900’s (as stated on their website) and was purchased by the Biel family in the 1940’s, who have owned it ever since. In this photo, a Mission Bell model stands in front of the notorious old gate, which remains a landmark in Mesilla.

Picacho Peak: 1944-2020

Picacho Peak is a volcanic mountain and recognizable peak of Las Cruces. Throughout the course of time, it has served many groups of people as a landmark for travel, such as on the Butterfield Trail, and as a beauty to admire.
The mountain is and excellent place to hike, and there are two Canyons running off at the base of it with spring waters, making for a beautiful landscape.

Korean War: Between 1950-1953

I was showing one of my coworkers some of my pictures on Instagram and she shared this and a few other photos that she had of her grandfather in the Korean War, and I asked if I could colorize them. (I posted this with her permission!) ☺️

Julian in Korea: 1950

Another one of my grandfather (left), who just recently passed away. I’m working on another photo of one of my coworker’s grandfathers, and I remembered that I had colorized this one!
My grandfather was drafted into the Korean War in 1950 and was honorably discharged after his Jeep rolled over his leg and broke his femur bone clean through. When I asked him what he was doing in this photo, he said they were mixing paint.

Searle, Forward: 1931-2019

The basketball season in 1931 for the Aggies was a 50% victory, losing to the Lobos that year. The yearbook makes a point to mention that they beat their old enemies the Wildcats, but doesn’t specify which college. I’m guessing it’s the University of Arizona Wildcats, but I can’t be sure. Today, the Lobos are the main rivals to NMSU. The building in the back used to be the gym, but it is now utilized by the music program for practice rooms and offices.
I took this in 2019, so that’s why I haven’t transitioned to 2020 yet haha.

Horseshoe: 1942-2019

Most of the oldest buildings on the NMSU campus are located on what’s known as the “horseshoe”, which is just a street that loops around like a horseshoe. When the university was being built, this horseshoe-shaped road was planned early on for the school buildings to be built around. Many students are familiar with walking up and down the sides of the horseshoe to get to their classes, especially since many of the science buildings are located along it.

Griggs Looking West: Unknown date-2019

I’ve posted the other half of this photo before, but I thought I’d post this one as well. The old post office on the right still stands, but the old buildings that once surrounded it adjacently and across the street are now gone. In the 1960’s, Las Cruces downtown underwent an Urban Renewal, resulting in many historic buildings being torn down in the area.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers: 1949-2019

One of the prized jewels of New Mexico State University is its Engineering program, which has been an offered major at the college since its beginning. This photo shows members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1949, which is still a professional association today.
