In the midst of a light rain storm you catch a glimpse of live history sitting right in front of you as the crew service the engine as they did back then and as they do now. Both restored and preserved as two machines meet again or for the first time from their same time back in the 40s.

Most days I always like to keep these two as polished and clean as can be. They both do the job well and they keep my head clean of sun burn lol. I am truly honored to wear these hats, because they say that most hats have their own personality to them. Everyday I keep them out of the dust and put them back next to each other and picturing what it would be like to see these numbers together in real life one day.

These ones however are different. When you see the numbers on these hats, some people wonder what they actually mean. These numbers that stand out very well in the sunlight are what they entitle numbers-wise. They are two iconic road numbers that served their country and moving all around the United States back during the war and back when transportation by rail was the way to go. These hats tell you all the history you need to know just by showing their numbers proudly and I am always happy to wear them proudly.

Stack Up!

The most common Santa Fe smokestack was the "smoke lifter". They were installed on all of the 2900 series locomotives and were primarily used to create more draft and keep the smoke exhaust out of the engineer/fireman's vision. The stack would be lowered to pass under bridges or tunnels. The stack would raise up 4ft in the air which was and still is controlled by a valve in which the engineer uses compressed air to raise and lower the stack. The smokestack would also be raised when the locomotive would be in an open area at high speeds and create more draft to allow the fire to burn hotter and have more power at 80-90mph.

**Santa Fe 2926 (April 2026)**

It was a great pleasure last weekend to go and photograph Santa Fe 2926 for the first time in the month of April. Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Route 66 which was hosted by the Wheels Museum in Albuquerque. New Mexico Heritage Rail was gladly invited to the event to help celebrate the Route 66 Centennial. I had a lot of fun and getting to talk to most of the crew and other members of the organization. It was a successful event was to capture some of the best photos I've ever taken. We'll see you in September!

(This time I was shot in RAW mode)
