Donna Walker James and Boyd Walker hosted a reception at Alexandria Union Station on October 29, for the dedication of a plaque honoring their mother, the Honorable Lois L. Walker (1939-2013). Speakers at the event included Mayor Justin Wilson; Virginia State Senator Adam Ebbin; Daniel Plougher, head of Virginians for High Speed Rail; and Al Cox, historic preservation specialist. . The plaque reads:

Lois Walker was a tireless advocate for multi-modal transportation solutions within the City of Alexandria and throughout the National Capitol area. Through her efforts Alexandria’s Union Station was donated to the City of Alexandria, a transportation commission was created, and high-capacity transportation corridors were designed. Lois served as President of Virginias for High-Speed Rail, as a board member with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Virginia Railway Express. Lois was an Alexandria resident for 45 years and a two-term member of City Council. Forever an Alexandria legend.

Lois Walker was recognized as a Living Legend of Alexandria in 2010. The portrait on the plaque by Nina Tisara is from the Office of Historic Alexandria collection.

I was so sorry to hear the news of Florence's passing. She will be truly missed.

It is with great sadness we share the news that Florence King passed away yesterday in her Alexandria home. Inducted into the Living Legends of Alexandria in 2018, Florence worked tirelessly in many capacities to better the Alexandria community. A board member of Living Legends, and so many other important organizations, Florence was an Alexandria resident and business owner for over thirty years. She recently ran as an Independent candidate for Alexandria’s City Council. As she said, “I’m running as an Independent because I have allegiance to the City. I’m not here to bolster my political resume, I’m running because I care about Alexandria.” More information will be released when available. For now, please see the profile written by Mike Lane https://alexandrialegends.org/king-florence/. Photos by Steven Halperson/ Tisara Photography)
