Celebrating “National Day of the Cowboy”
Taken in South Dakota on one of my favorite shoots for Professional's Choice 🤠

They ride for more than a paycheck.
They live by quiet values and strong hands.
They care for their horses like partners and lead by example without saying much at all.
Today we honor them.
Happy National Day of the Cowboy.

Last week I attended a Bison Talk at the Oklahoma State Fair. One of the things I learned was that my favorite bison in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge are amongst the oldest and purest genetics left in the US. No wonder these boys are so handsome! I also learned that their large humps and low-set heads are designed to act like a snowplow so they can forage for food in the harsh winters. It's been a lot of trial and error learning how to best capture them. Like any photography, proper light and time of day matter in order to best see their faces. The days are getting shorter and they are beginning to develop their winter coats. I can't wait for the first snowfall!

Encountered this handsome gent on a trail around the base of Mt Scott. We were both a little surprised to see each other. I gave him a wide berth and continued on the trail, but not before freezing the moment with a single image.

Some welcomed cooler temps in Oklahoma rendered an incredible day at the refuge. The grass is turning and fall is on the way. This is the second time I've seen this large male, he is very distinct with his bright gray/blue eyes. With such bad cataracts, it's hard to imagine how he manages, maybe that's why he is always paired up with another male. I'd like to think that they take care of each other that way. These majestic creatures have really taken won heart.

Here's to those who put the horse first, those who appreciate the little things in life and work hard to preserve the Western heritage. Here's to those who remember who they are and all they represent. Here's to the cowboys.

The Parallel Forest is located in the Wichita Mountains near the Bison that I have been visiting so frequently. It's an interesting little place to say the least. Over 20,000 red cedar trees were planted exactly 6 feet apart in every direction by the Federal Government as an experiment to deal with the "dust bowl" Over the years, it has garnered a reputation for being "haunted" as the trees have an eerie appearance. I was out there last weekend to photograph the bison, so I decided it was time to pay the forest a visit. I caught this image as the sun was setting through the trees. When I got home and looked at it on my computer, I was surprised tp notice what looks like a giant heart in the foreground formed by the roots of the trees. Between the light, the roots and the heart.. I can't help but feel like the forest was letting me know that it is not a place to be feared, but a place full of peaceful beauty and serenity.
