There’s something wonderfully unsettling about Welch Spring Hospital. Not scary exactly—more like the place still remembers what people came here hoping for. Dr. Diehl thought the spring and cave air could heal, and honestly, standing beside that cold blue water with the ruins tucked into the bluff, you can understand how people wanted to believe it. Before modern medicine had answers for everything, fresh air, clean water, and remote places carried a kind of hope. Now the hospital is barred, crumbling, and wrapped in vines, but the spring is still pouring out millions of gallons a day like it has no idea humans ever tried to build a dream around it.

Boze Spring feels like stepping into a pocket of time—clear pool, green plants waving in the current, and those stones stacked by hands that are long gone. I love imagining what it sounded like when the mill was active and this wasn’t just a “pretty stop,” but a working place where neighbors crossed paths and the day revolved around what needed to be ground, fixed, hauled, or built. Now the soundtrack is water and birds and the occasional laugh from the trail, and that feels like a fair trade. What’s your favorite kind of day for a visit—overcast, sunny, or right after rain?

Some travel buddies pack light. Penelope packs dramatic facial expressions, emergency naps, and the firm belief that every trip should include snacks.

This is the side of adventuring people don’t always see — the post-exploration collapse. The “I have sniffed every leaf, judged every trail, and now I must be held like a Victorian child with a fainting problem” phase.

And honestly? That’s part of why traveling with a little dog is so sweet. They don’t just come along for the ride. They turn the ride, the walk, the stop, the snack break, and the nap afterward into part of the story.

Akers Ferry feels like a little piece of Ozark time travel—river crossing, old roads, and the kind of place that makes you wonder who passed through before you.
