U Mass may wish to forget this, but in 1977 the school awarded Bill Cosby an honorary degree. Ted Polumbaum was there to take pictures for People magazine. At the reception afterwards, Cosby stripped down to skivvies, lit up a stogie and sat on his mother's knee. Ted thought this quite weird.

Ted documented his own children in gorgeous light and shadow, striking composition, high contrast -- none of the staid studio portraiture that was typical for the time. Here's middle child Judy and her Beagle pup Daphne.
