TBT. I recently had the pleasure of “meeting” Terry Gowler via the internet by way of my website: AnacortesToday.com. Terry shared fascinating bio information and a couple of photos of his grandfather, Reg LeBrun, WWI veteran and long-time resident of Anacortes. Among other jobs, LeBrun wrote columns for the Anacortes American: “Dewey Beach Notes” and “Tanker Highlights.” He earned the nicknames of “Town Greeter” and “Ambassador of Goodwill” due to his passion for welcoming foreign ship crews doing business in Anacortes. Terry said his grandfather greeted more than 100 tankers to Anacortes with donated magazines, gifts and fresh produce. He also conducted tours of the community for ships’ captains. The caption attached to this newspaper photo read: “Reg LeBrun shows a sign that he has prepared to be placed at the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce building on Commercial Avenue. LeBrun has for his interesting project the gathering of magazines which he places aboard ships that call at Anacortes. This task has made friends for Anacortes, the Chamber of Commerce, and for America, all over the world. Ships crews from other countries learn about Americans from the bundles of magazines they scan eagerly as their tankers leave the Anacortes port. Contributions for this project may be left at the Chamber of Commerce office.” Terry, who noted his grandfather also played Santa outside the Post Office, wrote: “If more people had his sense of giving back, the world would be a better place.” The color photo was taken at the Red Lion Tavern in 1973. Thank you, Terry, for sharing this story.

Wheels, wheels, everywhere! On a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon, hundreds gathered on Commercial Avenue for the 2026 Open Streets event. An amazing afternoon featuring event participants ranging from the Fidalgo Mountain Bikers to Island Health, from Kiwanis to the Anacortes Fire Department. The Skagit Bicycle Club was popular with an offer of free bike decorating for children. Organizers included volunteer Josh Gates and event sponsors included Marathon Refinery. Let's do it again next year!

While wheels turned, music filled the air today at the 2026 Open Streets event in downtown Anacortes. Pictured here are the Savage Blues Band at the Rockfish stage and Happy Accident at the Dockside Dogs stage. People of all ages gathered on Commercial Avenue as part of the street was closed to traffic. Free-wheelers ranged from tiny pedal bikes to e-bikes, scooters to wheeled skateboards. Lots of vendors, service organizations, police and fire department representatives. Thanks to organizers and sponsors. More photos to follow.

It was an exciting community celebration with a Hawaiian theme. Saturday the Salvation Army Anacortes Corps celebrated 120 years of service to this island community. Free food, games and giant inflatables drew a big crowd. Lots of kids, smiles and laughter. Thank you, Salvation Army, for service in the name of Jesus Christ.
