Once upon a time, our Christmas tree looked like it belonged in a magazine. Perfectly coordinated ornaments, matching gift wrap, not a paper snowflake in sight.
Now it’s a beautiful little hodgepodge of handmade crafts, family photos, and tiny memories collected year after year. And honestly, my heart has never loved our tree more.
This year, my three year old accidentally broke two of our “designer” ornaments. She burst into tears, thinking she ruined something special. I scooped her up, wiped her cheeks and told her gently, “it’s just stuff. It’s ok.” And it truly was. In that moment, I could feel the shift between the life we used to have and the life we’re living now… messy, magical, and fleeting.
We ended the night in matching pajamas with hot cocoa in hand, watching a Christmas movie while we camped out together in the living room. A new family tradition was born, and when my oldest said she hopes it never ends, my heart quietly whispered, “Me too.”
Our tree may no longer look “perfect” but somehow, it has never felt more like us.
Have you started any new traditions this year? Or have an old one you’d love to share? Let me know in the comments, I’m a nerd for this stuff….
