David Jensen Photography Portraits of animal companions and their people, families, high school seniors, executives. I believe that our animal companions define chapters of our lives.

A lifelong Alaskan, I started photographing animal companions in the early 1980s. My family opened the doors to our photography business in 1989 as a way to share our love of dogs, cats, horses and others. It's my constant desire to capture moments that help tell stories of love, silliness, laughter, frolic and meaning. I have a beautiful indoor studio. It's surrounded by an acre of trees, landsca

ping, antiques and Alaskana that reflect my family's 80+ years in Alaska. Best of all, it's all completely enclosed and secure so the kids, dogs and others can run around explore in a safe environment. Give me a call or send an email. Bring your pup(s) to the studio for a free consultation. I'd love to meet you and yours.

37 years in business!
In the mid-1980's, Carol had a very handsome collie named Skyler. He was aging and his physical health was beginning to decline. I decided to commission a photographer to photograph him. It was important to have someone come to me because of Skyler's mobility limitations. Unfortunately, no one was available and I took him to one of the very few studios who worked with families, must less those with a dog.

I surprised Carol with the gift of a portrait. She loved it. And that's when I decided, while taking journalism and photography classes at University of Alaska Anchorage (and Anchorage Community College) that there must certainly be others who would like to have portraits of, and with, their animal companions. Especially someone who would make home visits.
I stepped up my focus on photography, and had an exceptional teacher (Sam Kimura.)

I started my business in May, 1989. It was the same year that I graduated from UAA. I placed a very small (and expensive) advertisement in the Anchorage Telephone Utility Yellow Pages. My business name at the time was Alaska Pet-ography. The advertisement appeared the first week of June.
In less than one week after the ad appeared, I received calls from Rottweiler parents, a Golden Retriever mom and a pony family.

Business eventually grew to the point that I was handling a full-time business and a full-time job at Alaska Pacific University as their Public Affairs director. I had to make a choice: Stick with the full time employment (guaranteed salary, health benefits and retirement) -or- none of the above. "None of the above" also allowed the freedom to be creative and be my own boss. Obviously, I chose the latter and have never regretted a moment.

I love having the independence to make mistakes and live up to them. I love having the freedom from committees and layers of bureaucracy. I love creating portraits that cause people I meet to share their emotions with me. I worry, as most small business people do, that tomorrow promises uncertainties.

Things I'm most grateful for:
- Carol, my wife. She inspired me to pursue my passion.
- The animal companions I meet every day.
- My employees who have put up with my antics and do the real work. You are the best. I love watching you and your families thrive.
- Friends of Pets. Also formed in 1989, they invited me to meet and photograph thousands of dogs and cats who have found forever homes.
- Volunteers. So many who have stepped up to help with the studio's special events that have raised funds to support so many special people and causes.
- My customers. Your loyalty and support mean everything. It takes many of the uncertainties away.

Thank you everyone. We have more work to do.

And, as my grandmother, Joan Jensen, insisted: "Don't follow in my footsteps, I just stepped in something."

Destiny.
Windy conditions outside put Plan B into action. We found a quiet forest and, if you look closely, the ground covering is turning green and colorful. There is hope! :)

Maggie, too
She's my occasional lighting model when Iris is being lazy.
Whenever I roll out the big white backdrop (for executive portraits during today's work) she scurries over and sits in the middle of the setting without hesitation or invitation. Of course, she's expecting a nice jerky treat reward in return.
Good girl, Maggie, too!

Benny. Therapy Dog/Aussie.
While it's not a prerequisite that my corporate customers include dogs as a part of their professional portraits, it always makes the photographs shine brighter (and me, too!) Benny is a therapy dog at Ever After Counseling. He was one of three dogs accompanying four counselors/therapists for portraits at their mid-town offices yesterday. Check out their website. Great people!

Deshka (10)
I've been on the mend for a couple weeks following a necessary and overdue medical procedure. Yesterday was my first opportunity in a bit to put in an honest day's work behind the camera. It was so satisfying.

Working with Deshka and his family was rejuvenating (just in time) as I reflect on what will be 37 years in business as a photographer of pets and their people next month. More to share about this milestone - and what's up ahead - very soon.

Here's a sneak peek: Fairbanks North Star Borough's animal shelter has approved installation of a 907Chip 24/7 Microchip scanning station at their facility. We've been working on this for many months (lots of hoops!) We hope to have it up and running by July. A volunteer in Fairbanks has been steadfast.

My afternoon with Bella and Lucy included stealth-like cat-arazzi techniques. Under their couch. Up and down the stairs. And, eventually, under their table.

Is it really photo bombing if you're beautiful?
Iris hopped into the pose with Ollie (9) and Joni (14) earlier today. Later, we braved the cold for some lovely outdoor photographs.
Three magnificent baby dogs.
