www.jbvoigt.com Flying and photography, both go together so beautifully.

Everything takes on a new perspective... even 10 feet off the ground. As a young boy, I spent hours building and flying model airplanes with my father. Starting at age 11, I cut grass after school so I could afford flying lessons on the weekends. It didn’t take long to realize that I enjoyed the view OUTSIDE the aircraft more than the flying. That’s when the photography bug hit me. Fast forward 40

years, combine a great drone and sophisticated camera... and you get a 400 foot tall mobile tripod! All of my images are shot from the vantage point of the drone. I’m an FAA Commercial rated drone pilot. My previous experience as a manned pilot lends itself well to this discipline. I’m a former Naval Officer. After graduating from Annapolis in 1982 I served the nation for 8 years. 5 of those years were spent at sea; the remainder teaching at the Naval Academy and Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. My aerial images are all about perspective. Common landmarks and cityscapes become uncommon from the air. Most of the images are full of bright natural colors. I’m a sucker for sunrises and sunsets, sailboats, water views... and of all things... abandoned to***co barns. There’s a certain pride and peace attached to these old icons. My photography prints are for sale on my website, and I would like to invite you to purchase them at www.jbvoigt.com.

I came across the Naval Academy chapel dome while it was mid-renovation, and the scaffolding with the promise of a bright penny-like beacon felt quietly striking from above. Bands of blue water, green lawns, and neat rooftops guide the eye to that central dome, giving the scene a calm, ordered feel while small details keep it approachable. I’m sharing a view of St Mary’s Church overlooking Annapolis and the State Capitol. The steeple and the river curve give the scene a clear focal point, while brick rooftops and spring greens keep it feeling calm and familiar. There’s a sister image that creates a miniature look — they make a nice pair on a wall if you want a subtle surprise. St Mary’s Church is a view toward Annapolis and the State Capitol that rewards a second look. I like that the scene reads like a tiny, carefully arranged model, with a slender spire as the anchor, neat rows of roofs, and a curving river that leads your eye. There’s a quiet, curious energy to it that makes you notice small details you might otherwise miss. See it here: https://www.jbvoigt.com/warehouse/art_print_products/default-rpqw3kkfjia

I was in Normandy in July 2024 to honor my Uncle Charlie. One evening a sunset over wide green fields caught my eye. The light made the greens glow, round hay bales punctuated the meadow, and faint tractor tracks curved toward a low hedgerow and a distant line of trees. It was a quiet, steady scene that felt both peaceful and loaded with history. My uncle was shot down in a P-47 one day after D-Day and was rescued thanks to brave French allies, so that calmness carries a lot with it for me.
