This year marked my 14th as a judge in the North Carolina 4-H photography judging. It’s always delightful to see what the children come up with. Sometimes they need to be encouraged to tell a story with the photo, sometimes they need some technical guidance, and sometimes the photos are breathtaking. I enjoy it.

Great folks!

Another great set of photos to judge this year at the state 4H competition. I studied 41 junior photos (ages 9-13), and they were spectacular.

That's pretty amazing.

Fun evening judging 4H horse photographs at the Hunt Horse Complex.

There were two best ones in my opinion: One looked like an autumn postcard - a bay horse in the foreground but underexposed because it was in the only patch of shadow in the picture under a couple of big, colorful trees, and behind that, a criss-cross of white fences across green grass punctuated by more colorful trees.

The other best shot in my eye was a horse rearing up in a pond. The horse had stirred up some mud in its immediate vicinity, but the rest of the water around showed just one set of ripples coming out from the horse and just a gentle lighting with occasional blue reflected from the sky. The forelegs were actively splashing, and the splash was frozen by a fast shutter. The bay horse was splotched with complementary orange color from the iron-rich muddy water.

Here's a fine horse from a 2008 paint horse show :)
