Jeremy Davis Photography

Jeremy Davis Photography I first started with photography way back in the early 90s. Sounds exciting, right? I wasn’t very good at it, and it was back in the 35mm film days.

I was working for my dad as a Private Investigator, and I would take pictures of smashed up cars and bumps and bruises. So, I had to wait a day to have pictures developed just to see how bad I was. But, dad helped me, and he also spun up a wedding photography business.

We had the pleasure of shooting professional headshots for the members of the Customer Advanced Lab Operations organization at Cisco this week. Here is a sampling of some of those shots. We set up on campus at Cisco and shot about 20 headshots in less than an hour. I take pride in delivering final images quickly, so their gallery was delivered later that evening. Happy clients, and happy colleagues, since my day gig is at Cisco as well!

== What is 'Bokeh'? ==
Blurry backgrounds aren’t just for fancy cameras. They’re your ticket to instantly pro-level photos. Thanks to portrait mode, your phone can transform everyday moments into professional-looking masterpieces. Whether you’re snapping a selfie, capturing a candid, or taking product shots, that dreamy background blur (aka bokeh) makes your subject pop while adding a touch of elegance.

The best part? It’s ridiculously easy to use. Just open your camera, switch to portrait mode, and let your phone work its magic. The software automatically detects the subject and blurs the background for a polished, professional look. Perfect for headshots, pet photos, or even showcasing your latte art, because yes, your coffee deserves the spotlight too.

So, next time you’re taking photos, don’t settle for flat, cluttered backgrounds. Tap into portrait mode and start creating images that look like they came straight out of a photoshoot. You’re not just capturing moments, you’re telling a story, and it’s all about focus.

== That's Not Centered! ==
Centering your subject might seem like the obvious choice, but here’s the secret: off-center is where the magic happens. Placing your subject slightly to the side creates a sense of balance and intrigue that naturally draws the viewer’s eye. This technique, known as the "Rule of Thirds," divides your frame into a grid of nine equal parts. Simply align your subject along one of those lines or intersections, and boom - you’ve instantly leveled up your photo game. It’s effortless, creative, and very cool. 😎

Why does this work so well? It’s all about visual storytelling. An off-center subject leaves room for the background to shine, adding depth and context to your shot. Whether it’s a busy cityscape, a soothing beach, or a colorful mural, the extra space enhances the vibe and gives your audience more to explore. Plus, it’s perfect for capturing movement - your subject feels alive and dynamic, as if they’re about to step right out of the frame.

So, next time you pull out your phone or camera, resist the urge to center everything. Play with perspectives, embrace negative space, and let the Rule of Thirds guide your creativity. It’s a small shift with a big impact, and once you try it, you’ll never go back to boring, perfectly centered shots again. Happy shooting!

== Why Phone Photography? ==
Your phone’s camera may be small, but it packs an impressive punch when it comes to capturing moments. With advances in technology, even the tiniest lens can deliver sharp, vibrant, and professional-looking photos. From wide-angle landscapes to detailed close-ups, your pocket-sized device is a powerful tool waiting to be explored. The best part? You don’t need to be a seasoned photographer to create stunning images—just a few clever techniques can unlock its full potential.

Start by mastering the basics of lighting and composition. Natural light is your best friend, so aim to shoot during golden hour—those magical moments just after sunrise or before sunset. For composition, use the rule of thirds: imagine your frame divided into nine equal parts and position your subject along the lines or intersections. This simple trick instantly makes your photos more balanced and visually pleasing. And don’t forget about perspective! Experiment with angles to add depth and drama to your shots, whether you’re capturing a towering skyscraper or a cozy coffee table setup.

Once you’ve nailed the basics, dive into your phone’s editing tools to elevate your photos further. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation to make your images pop, or use built-in filters for a quick refresh. Many phones also offer advanced features like portrait mode, night mode, and even manual settings to fine-tune your shots. The key is to practice and play around with what your camera can do. With a little creativity and these practical tips, you’ll soon be turning everyday moments into share-worthy masterpieces.
