Outdoor newborn photos are something new I have been doing since the pandemic started and I am more and more excited about every session. It’s been a crazy year and we have all been adapting our lives to try to find some sense of normalcy while being as safe as possible. This has caused so many traditions to change and forced us all to be a little creative with our activities and celebrations. While I am definitely missing in home sessions, I love these unique outdoor newborn photos and I hope to do more even after this pandemic is over. What’s one new 2020 change you think you’d actually like to keep?

Happy birthday to this amazing momma who is also my oldest friend. She always seems to have an infinite amount of love to give and despite having her hands literally and figuratively full most of the time, she’s always up for lending an empathetic ear, having a genuine conversation or offering a laugh to help a friend. I’m so thankful for your friendship and I hope you are feeling some of that love back today!

I was grateful for my session with this family yesterday. It turned out to be colder than we expected and yet they were all troopers. Instead of complaints there was joy, jokes and laughter. When it was someone’s turn to take a portrait, everyone cheered literally cheered them on, trying to make them smile and forget about their chills. Being their photographer was truly a pleasure. Seeing them make the most of their time together and try to bring out the best in each other lifted my spirits. We also captured many great photos of course!

My favorite photos are the ones I capture in between the poses, the moments when my clients can really be themselves.

Wishing this morning looked like this. At least my soon to be 2 year old likes to stand at the window and sing, “Rain, rain, go away...” It’s so adorable it almost makes me appreciate these gray days. Almost.

Yesterday my daughter and I had an “amazing afternoon”. That’s how she described it. We went to the park to enjoy the weather and fly a kite, just the two of us. We laughed together, running as fast as we could across the field to get the kite to come off of the ground and we marveled at how high it flew. It was one of those perfect afternoons where you lose track of time because you are having so much fun.

This morning was quite the opposite. The sunshine was gone. Now the weather was just dark and stormy and so were we. She got frustrated about every activity she chose. I got frustrated about her frustration and I that never works out well. I tell her all the time that she is allowed to have all of her feelings, and so I had to apologize that I got mad at her for being mad. I told her I loved her no matter what, just the way she is. She gave me a big hug and then calmed down and dried her tears in my lap. It was very imperfect, yet those moments snuggled on her floor making amends felt just as important as our perfect afternoon yesterday. It was a real and vulnerable moment when we both accepted our imperfect selves and felt safe and loved.

It’s hard to believe, but fall is around the corner! It’s the busiest time for family photos for a reason - cooler weather, beautiful crunchy leaves, and sunset at a reasonable hour so that we can capture the best light without forcing your kids to take pictures during their bedtime. I have a few spots left in October for outdoor family sessions. Send me a message to book your spot!

Lately it feels like the world is spinning out of control. Normally it would take a lot less than what 2020 has thrown at me to feel like I am spiraling out of control myself. Lately I have been coping by doubling down on the things that make me feel grounded: my self care and my family. I haven't made any drastic changes, but just making these things the top priority has helped me a lot these past few weeks. Little things like taking a bit of a social media break or leaving the dishes dirty for a little longer so my kids and I can enjoy the nice weather outside have helped me feel centered. After all, the world around us might be crazy, but we can still make our own little world a healthy place to be by taking care of ourselves and each other. @ Arlington Heights, Illinois

Outdoor newborn sessions are my new favorite. We decided to shoot this newborn session outside instead of in the new parents' home as an extra safety precaution, but I am in love with the results.

If you or someone you know is expecting soon, contact me about an outdoor newborn session. We can capture beautiful photos of this incredibly important time while prioritizing your family's safety.

Happy Friday!

It’s Friday movie night here! It’s been hard to keep track of the days ever since quarantine started and our schedule went out the window. The weekends, especially when we were fully locked down, seemed like any other day. We began having Friday movie night just as a way to mark the end of the week. My daughter would talk about which movie she was going to pick all week and count down the days until she could sit down with us with a big bowl of popcorn. Slowly our lives have started to become busier and we’ve needed to go back to using a calendar and knowing the date, but we are still doing Friday night movie night. It’s one of the traditions I hope sticks for the long haul because quality family time is the a very worthwhile thing to block out time for.

After bathtime my 5 year old daughter asks to be carried to her room. Sometimes, through my end of the day exhaustion, I want to say, “just walk”. But I always carry her and the next night she asks again without fail. It’s almost as if she knows one day she’ll be too big to hold like that anymore, so she’s soaking up those snuggles down the hallway while she can. I am too.

Love, belonging, connection.

This is what we all want. When we describe happiness I think that’s a lot of what we mean. And it all starts here. If we can give these three things to our children we can set them up for a lifetime of self worth and resilience.

We can’t protect our kids from all the challenges of the world. Right now I think we are all feeling that more than usual. I have been so sad about my kids missing out on time with their peers because I know that is extremely important for their development. But I don’t have a lot of control over that right now. What I can control is trying to make the most of this time together, trying to build our connection so they can feel like they belong and that they are loved.
