Composer/Saxophonist Julian Meyers has been playing the saxophone since the age of 9 where he first began learning to play the saxophone in an After School music program at P.S. 176, from Edward Fishkind his first music teacher, and according to Julian, the Best Junior High School Instrumental Educator Ever. After relocating to New Jersey, he continued to commute to Queens each day for months to be a part of the same music program with his mentor.

Julian has over 15 years experience working as a music educator in the New York City and 26years playing professionally a variety of music style with artiste ranging from Dizzy Gillespie, Cecil Payne, Gang Starr ‘s Guru and B.T. Express. This experience exposed Julian to styles of music ranging from Straight Ahead & Progressive Jazz, Fund & R & B, to hot & spicy sound Latin Rock with band “Sequida”, performing in Tokyo, Paris and over the United States.

It was as an educator that Julian first began exposing young adults and families to the world of jazz, one of his life’s Passions. Over time Julian was led to the realization that one reason that there was little to no interest in Jazz among the young, was that there were virtually no places that provided opportunities for people to expose their children to Live Jazz, before they were 21, an age at which they tended to gravitate towards the “Booty Shakin”, and Pop music of the day. This realization, allowed Julian to create various ways to try to foster an interest in Jazz in his students that he still uses up to this day.

Julian spent most his career as an NYC Music Educator working in the school district he grew up in, Community School District 29, Queens. In 2012, having realized that Jazz is a microcosm of America, the perfect blending of the music of the people who have made America the cultural epicenter it is today, as well as the root of all American popular music, Julian was led to create what would become his not only his newest and most ambitious musical endeavor yet, but his “Vision & Mission” as well, the “Family Jazz Renaissance”...

Julian released his album “Emergence” in -----------year and is currently working on his second album called …………. Julian became the newest member of Lucy Blanco & James Lovell’s “Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, & can be heard on the group’s Debut album Taguiera.

Lucy Blanco’s career as a jazz vocalist happened from a series of unique opportunities. Now, years later, she is former co-founder, lead singer of the Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble and now leads the newly formed Garifuna Jazz Ensemble in New York City. She has collaborated with renowned pianist, Warren Byrd, trumpeter Saskia Laroo on solo projects and has crossed paths with Jazz luminaries such as Bertha Hope and Billy Higgins. Lucy soon became consumed by her passion for singing and invested herself in learning jazz, honing her performance skills at the World Stage jazz in Leimert Park, Los Angeles. She later joined Radiant Voices, where she studied interpreting jazz standards under the direction of Dr. Barry Harris and participating in an Artist in Residence program in Amsterdam, an experience that marked her significantly. Mentored by renowned pianist, Michael Andrews, and jazz vocalist Dahl Scott-McDuff, Lucy blossomed as a musician and began to seek out ways to combine her family heritage of Garifuna rhythms with jazz. The Garifuna are an indigenous ethnic group of mixed African and native Caribbean ancestry originally from St Vincent and the Grenadines who were displaced to Central America in 1795; they have retained a strong oral culture which is transmitted through music. In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed Garifuna culture a “masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage to humanity”. Lucy sees both her solo work and collaborative efforts as integral parts of her musical identity and a beautiful opportunity to share her culture.
After some years Lucy decided to move back to the East Coast to pursue a career in jazz and continue her work with her Garifuna heritage; her first stop was Hartford Connecticut where she quickly began making a name for herself. Her first solo performance which took place at Trinity on Main, garnered praise from, Maurice D. Robertson, music critic of the Hartford Jazz Society. She went on to do several collaborations with international jazz pianist, Warren Byrd which included continued her first recorded piece, an interpretation of Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil”.
She eventually relocated permanently to New York City, the “Mecca of Jazz” where she met Garifuna musician-composer, with whom she founded the Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble. Ensemble was the first project of its kind; an innovative genre-bending project that blends Garifuna language, instruments and traditional rhythms such as Punta, Paranda and Hungu Hungu, with jazz arrangements. In 2017 The AGJE reorganized and became Garifuna Jazz Ensemble led by Lucy Blanco along with an eclectic group of seasoned musicians that serve up tasty repertoire of exciting music that has been well received wherever they perform. She is humbled by the opportunity to preserve the Garifuna culture and music in her own unique style. As one of the few female Garifuna artists and only Garifuna jazz vocalist, Lucy carries out this momentous task with an indelible style, charisma and grace.
