Have you ever looked at a photograph and thought, “That is a beautiful picture,” but somehow felt absolutely nothing?
Then there are those photographs. The ones that make you stop.
Maybe the person isn't perfectly posed. Maybe they aren't even looking at the camera. Yet somehow, you know them.
That is the part of portrait photography that fascinates me.
Because I am not just watching for a smile. I am watching what happens when you relax. I am paying attention to your body language, the way you move, the colors you respond to, what you choose to wear, and what happens when you finally stop worrying about whether you look “right.”
Trust changes a photograph. So does emotion. So does the moment when you forget there is a camera in the room.
And honestly, that is what I am looking for. Not perfection.
Recognition.
I want you to look at your finished portrait and think, “There I am.”
I wrote more about what is really happening behind the camera, including why posing, wardrobe, color, emotion, trust, and even the artwork you choose can completely change the way a portrait feels.
Because the best portrait isn't necessarily the one where you look perfect.
It is the one where you look like you.
