I love my music. A playlist I picked just for me, no compromises β€” it's one of my favorite things to bring on a walk to boost my mood and shake off the morning fog.

But this week, my music was wrong.

I started my usual long morning walk with my earbuds in, and I just couldn't settle. Something felt off. On a hunch, I pulled them out.

Instantly, everything shifted. My nervous system went quiet. I heard birds. Gravel crunching underfoot. I started noticing β€” the morning sun, the smell of the air, the particular blue of an early morning sky. The walk became exactly what I needed it to be.

Our bodies are smarter than we give them credit for. In a world of constant digital noise, sometimes the most restorative thing isn't the right playlist β€” it's the quiet we've been drowning out.

When did you last walk without anything in your ears? πŸ‘‡

Here’s to the moms who keep showing up. 🌸 For the ones who need a reminder today β€” you are enough, exactly as you are. Step outside for even five minutes. Let the fresh air do what it does best. Happy Mother’s Day.

I love when I get the chance to print big.

The details that can be overlooked in a smaller print get their time to shine and the bigger photo has a subtle power to pull me back and immerse me in that moment. This 16x20 print of one of my favorite backpacking memories is heading out to a new home today, and I couldn't be happier.

Can we talk about what moms actually need for Mother's Day?

Not brunch. Not a card. Not another candle.

Outside. Quiet. Twenty minutes where nobody needs anything from you.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but going outside alone β€” even briefly, even just to the end of the street and back β€” is a legitimate form of self-care. The research backs it up. More importantly, your nervous system already knows it.

The hardest part so many of us have? Giving yourself permission. (πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈanyone else?)

If you're shopping for a mom in your life β€” or making a list of what you actually want this year β€” maybe bringing a piece of the outside world onto her walls is a pretty good daily reminder that she deserves to be in it.

This month, I've been talking about what it means to connect with nature on purpose β€” to go outside with intention, to slow down, to let it give something back.

One of the ways I keep that grounded, connected feeling at home is having nature on the walls. Something that catches the light in the morning, adds color to my space, and reminds me what's out there. Here's what's on my walls now.

Starting tomorrow, May 1: Spring Cleaning Sale. I'm clearing out my remaining matte metal prints β€” limited inventory, real discounts. There's also a chance to win an 8x10 matted glossy print with any purchase or sign up for my newsletter for a no-purchase-required option to win.

If you're shopping for yourself or looking for a meaningful Mother's Day gift for someone who loves nature β€” this is the moment.

The part I used to skip: what happens after.

I'd come home from a morning outside, download images, and immediately move on to the next thing. It took me a while to realize I was leaving the best part on the table β€” that quiet window right after, when everything you noticed is still fresh.

Now I try to sit with it, even for a few minutes. Sometimes I write a sentence or two. Sometimes I just make tea, look at what I made, and remember what I was feeling.

Research actually backs this up β€” reflection after time in nature is one of the strongest ways to deepen your connection to it over time and have that feeling stick with you longer. You don't have to be a photographer. You just have to be willing to notice, and then remember.

β€”
I'm also making some room over here in my inventory. A spring sale is coming May 1 β€” matte metal prints, real discounts, and a chance to win a print. More soon. 🌿

Two weeks ago, four astronauts flew around the far side of the Moon and looked back at us.

What they captured β€” Earth, soft blue and white against complete blackness β€” is one of the most striking images of our planet in years. I haven't been able to stop thinking about that mission and the incredible images and stories of human connection that came from it.

There's a phenomenon called the overview effect β€” the shift in perspective astronauts describe when they see Earth from space for the first time. A sudden, bone-deep awareness of how small it is, how thin the atmosphere, how inseparable everything living on it really is.

You don't have to leave the atmosphere to feel a version of that. You just have to go outside and actually arrive there.

I've spent years going into nature with a camera, and the thing I keep learning is that the camera isn't the point β€” paying attention is the point. Slowing down enough to notice what's actually around you. The way light moves through leaves. The sound of water before you see it. The particular quiet of a trail before the rest of the world wakes up.

That kind of attention changes something. Research backs this up β€” intentional time in nature reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood, and over time deepens your sense of connection to the natural world. And people who feel genuinely connected to nature tend to take better care of it.

So this Earth Day: go outside. Use your senses. Notice one thing you've never noticed before. Tell someone about it β€” or just sit with it yourself.

Swipe for 5 small ways to make your time outside actually land. 🌍🌿

I almost didn't go. It had been one of those weeks where the to-do list keeps winning.

But I went anyway β€” just a longer walk in my neighborhood, just to get outside β€” and about ten minutes in, something shifted. I wasn't thinking about my list anymore. I was just noticing β€” the mountains in the distance, the cool morning air, everything starting to turn green.

That's the thing about going outside on purpose. It has a way of giving back more than you brought to it. Research show that the biggest impact on mental health is not only getting outside with intention, but reflecting on the experience when you're done. It helps those feelings stick a little better and for longer to help you recall them in times of stress.

When did you last have a moment like that? πŸ‘‡
