Update on JRDA Champs photos:
Games 4-12 will be coming. I am currently working full time and I’m also in the final weeks of my Master’s degree so those two take priority.
I apologize to those teams who are currently waiting but I promise these photos are worth the wait!
Bonus!! For Game 4 (Rose City Rollers Juniors vs Seattle Derby Brats) I was allowed to borrow someone’s mirrorless camera with their 70-200 lens so I’m very excited to share those photos with you all!
My hopes are to at least work through two games over the weekend as a break from school work. Fingers crossed!

If at any point you saw me with my nose in my phone over the weekend at JRDA champs it was how I was processing and uploading my sneak peek photos.
Of course this also meant folks like Andrew Keyes - Derby Photography could surprise me with 360 cameras in my face 🤣
Keyes sure loves this gadget and gets amazing videos of cheers and high five tunnels.

To someone who is unfamiliar with roller derby this photo can look like pure chaos. But as someone who photographs, plays, and officiates roller derby, I analyze every photo to see what story it is telling.
What stuck out most to me in this photo are the jam refs in the right foreground and how in sync these two officials were all weekend with their jammers. You can see how Whisk changed her stance to look around the other jam ref (Bona Petite)) to keep eyes on her skater.
One of my favorite parts of photographing in the center of the track is witnessing the communication and teamwork of officiating crews, and this crew was on point!

This was the first game of the weekend in the Women's division and it was the top seed Santa Cruz Derby Groms vs the bottom seed West Coast Jr. Knockouts.
The score absolutely didn't reflect the spirit that West Coast played with, and Santa Cruz clearly earned their spot as top seed with their incredible talent.

Wouldn't be fair to share photos of Pittsburgh Derby Brats without also sharing this great shot I got of George Carnage. This was his face right before he was about to call for the Brats on stream. His passion for supporting this team and many others in the Junior Roller Derby community is incredible. Thanks for all you do George!

One of the first things I noticed during the first game of 2023 JRDA Championships is how FAST these skaters were (sometimes too fast, lol).
Major kudos to the all the skating officials who worked hard to keep up all weekend long.

Starting to go through Game 1 from 2023 JRDA Championships and came across this moment where Des Moines Derby Brats had their first lead change in the second half of their game against Foco Junior Roller Derby.
Des Moines started the second half trailing 67 to 105, but they must have had a fantastic pep talk during intermission. During Jam 7 of the second half, Tackle Berry had an incredible jam, and coupled with the outstanding defense and offense of the blocking line, the Brats scored 14 points, shifting the game in their favor-- and the crowd went wild!
This momentum shift was the first of many magical moments that occurred all weekend long for these incredible athletes.

It was an absolute pleasure photographing both of these teams this weekend.
At my first JRDA event I wasn’t sure what to expect and I was just blown away by their athleticism and also their professionalism on the track.
