Caldwell place

Cataloochee Valley, North Carolina

A historic, two story farmhouse in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, built by Hiram Caldwell, between 1903-1906 from local timber out of Waynesville, with imported finishes. It features weatherboarding, shingled gables, and interior paneling.

It's a key part of the Cataloochee Historical Area, open for public viewing, and notable for its preserved interior woodwork and the surrounding landscape where elk often roam.

The house is empty but showcases elaborate woodwork and newspaper pages used as wallpaper, with lines from old articles still visible.
It's one of the largest and best-preserved homes from the era when families lived in the valley before it became part of the national park.

Fontana Dam, North Carolina

Located in Western North Carolina, it remains the tallest concrete dam east of the Mississippi River.
Built rapidly between 1942 and 1945 by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the dam generated massive amounts of electricity . This power was routed to aluminum factories in Alcoa, Tennessee, for military aircraft construction, and to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for uranium enrichment during the Manhattan Project.
Standing 480 feet tall and 2,365 feet wide, the dam is an impressive feat of mid-century civil engineering. Its unique spillway system was specially designed to safely handle a 400-foot vertical drop of water without causing erosion to its foundation.

The iconic Appalachian Trail crosses directly over the top of the dam. The location is a highly anticipated stopping point for long-distance hikers, who famously refer to the nearby shelters and facilities as the "Fontana Hilton".
