Every time I see a Scarlet Tanager nearby my heart skips a beat. This photo was taken at my house, and it was just about to splash in the bird pond.

The Scarlet Tanager is my spark bird (the bird that got me interested in all birds) and the first bird I ever photographed with a nice camera. I’m still pretty crazy about them!

I don’t usually post close-ups with this little habitat/scenery, but this was my best photo of a Blue-winged Warbler visiting today! It was at the nearby gamelands, and the last time I saw it there was in 2021.
It feels somewhat unlikely they will try to breed in WNC again, but I can dream.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak in early morning light today at the house. Such a treat to see this bird! It first appeared on the deck yesterday, and took my breath away for a second - I hadn’t heard it and wasn’t expecting it. He was quite friendly this morning, posing on the tree closest to the house and taking long breaks at the feeder. I hope it sticks around a few more days!

Something a little different. This Black-and-white Warbler isn’t singing their usual tune - it sounds more like a Blackpoll Warbler to me. It took me awhile to find this bird after hearing it, so my imagination was running wild trying to figure out what species was making this sound. When I saw it was a Black-and-white Warbler it definitely fit, especially when you can see it singing, but it was still surprising to hear this bird singing a different song. 🎶

I spoke with a few other people on the trail that day (including ), and we all had a similar experience - stopping for a while and going a little crazy until we could figure out which bird was singing. I have no idea if it has a physical issue (one birder suggested perhaps a syrinx problem) or if it just learned the song a little strangely. If you have any theories I would love to hear them!

We don’t get many Prothonotary Warblers passing through WNC, so this one seen earlier today was a real treat! I found it in a few areas today, and had so much fun watching it forage along the lake. It paused a few times and didn’t seem to mind that I was just watching it exist. I think they’re one of the friendliest warblers, and it always makes me so happy to see one.

The last two years we’ve had a pair nest in the county, and time will tell if they’re here again this season. I sure hope they are. :)

Black-throated Green Warbler in early morning light today. They were particularly active this morning, and one of our earlier warbler arrivals in NC.

A few migratory species from the last few days. The Worm-eating Warbler was at my house this morning! This was the first time I’ve heard and seen one this year, and I had a surprisingly friendly encounter watching it forage and eat bugs. The Black-and-white Warbler is from a few days ago at the house, when it flew into a nearby tree. I’ve been hearing them daily here. And finally, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.

Northern Parula in the yard today! It’s on the early side for one to show up here, and I’m shocked that my first decent warbler photos of the year are of a Parula. That’s never happened before. I heard this bird singing and eventually it was close enough to photograph. (I think it was considering a bath.)

I just had my first Black-throated Green arrive yesterday and Black-and-white today, so it’s really starting to feel like spring here! My absolute favorite time of the year.

Recent spring birding moments, featuring a Louisiana Waterthrush, a Pine Siskin that visited my house today, Pine Warbler, and a Screech Owl on the driveway.

I’m so excited for the migratory warblers heading this way right now!

Now that it’s mid-February I can allow myself to get excited about warblers returning. Right?
