It was all about mountains, flaming azaleas and rhododendron yesterday. The workshop with couldn’t have picked a better day to roam Roan Mountain. The 3am wakeup call to drive to the mountain and hike to watch the sunrise was well worth it. More pictures to come!

Finally caught baby screech owl poking its head out from the nest box. Pretty sure this cutie and any siblings it may have will fledge soon. Dad (or Mom) is still keeping an eye on them, but he’s getting tired (see yawning picture).

In my recent visit to the Smoky Mountains I passed by the mountain range known as the Chimney Tops. In November 2016, a severe fire burned more that 10,000 acres on Chimney Tops. In October 2020, I joined my friends
and in the Smokies and took the image you see in the last frame. (It looks like it's burning, but it is just fog from early morning.). Then a couple weeks ago I was able to take the first 2 images of this special place. It is so heartwarming that after 10 years spring growth is again covering the beautiful mountain.

Sometimes you go to places with high hopes and even if the outcome didn't go quite as you expected you still find joy in what you did achieve. I spent 2 half days in Cades Cove looking to photograph bears and while I saw a great number of them, none were in a great position to photograph - too far away, buried heads in tall grass, in the woods or surrounded by leaves in a tree. I envy those who were lucky to get clear photos of the bears! But time spent in this little slice of heaven was well worth it despite the lack of 'award winning' images. I did mange to get a few photos of these baby bears. They were simply too cute to watch!

I was sitting on the patio yesterday afternoon when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A blue bird flew out of the birdhouse. I thought it’s flying was pretty awkward and then quickly realized it was a baby that had fledged! I ran and grabbed my camera and found it sitting on a branch in a tree close by. Then I sat and watched as it’s brother/sister try and decide if it wanted to fledge too. It couldn’t decide, but after about 15 minutes, it flew out too! My photographic skills capturing it’s leap were as wobbly as it’s first flight! Haha!!

Mama owl observing her nest from a distance. There’s not much room in the nest now. I did find out there were 3 babies. Unfortunately one fell out of the nest and didn’t make it. So very sad. I was never able to capture all three together on the nest. One seemed to always be buried on the bottom of the owl pile when I was there. Fingers crossed for a safe fledging for the remaining 2 babies.

I went to visit the owls yesterday. As soon as I got out of the car two hawks flew overhead and landed in a tree close by. I stayed a minute and took their photo. Little did I know these same two hawks would shortly be taunting mama owl and trying to knock her out of her nest. I was terrified they would be successful, but thank goodness they weren’t. She took a much needed rest after they left but occasionally would keep one eye open.

Papa Great Horned Owl sleeping on the job all tucked up in the tree. Mama owl was hunkered down in the nest with baby owl(s?) and couldn’t get a good picture. It had rained earlier and she was probably keeping them dry.

Animal tracks heading towards the bobby sock trees in Yellowstone. The trees look as if they are wearing white socks; hence, the name, “bobby socks trees.” The dead trees soak up the silica-rich water, turning the lower portion of the trees white.
