Support my next photography series…

Obscura interrogates the fashion industry’s fascination with hyper dark skin while simultaneously erasing the lived realities of Black suffering, specifically the ongoing Sudanese plight. The work exposes how darkness is aestheticized, consumed, and celebrated on the surface, yet stripped of its political and humanitarian context. Obscura positions beauty and violence in uneasy proximity, asking who gets seen, who gets ignored, and what it means when visibility exists without accountability.

The presentation of this project is long overdue, but maybe softness just takes time.
For so long, Black girls have been told to be strong before we’ve even been allowed to be gentle.
This series is a celebration of the quiet, the tender, the yearning to simply be.
Grateful to for the warmth and for stepping in with such light.
As I build toward larger editorials, this effort was a trial run that taught me about communication and flexibility. It taught me about timing and artistic collaboration. And furthermore reminded me that there is power in my softness, too.

I’m drawn to red (or variations thereof). There’s something about its honesty, its quiet fire. When arrived in that shade, I saw autumn in him. It wasn’t the season, not quite. Rather a feeling. The soft burn before everything turns cold. When Favour stepped in front of my lens, he carried an energy that we photographers thrive in. Favour was warm and grounded. His boldness could be felt in every frame. He turned my favorite red into a feeling that I want to capture again and again. Thank you for providing the space for we creatives to meet and feel alive on a cloudy day when one season was passing into another.

I shoot by feeling. The day of the content meet up was split between clouds and sun, and I chose to live in the gray. There was something about that cold light. How it made the warmth of a hat —a stacked beanie— mean more. This shoot with was my way of invoking the chill of a winter to come and the clothes we humans need to survive it. A moment of finding beauty in the in-between.

I am always chasing a story when I build a shoot. And when the story isn’t mine to shape fully, I look for it. The showroom was white, bare, almost austere. In that emptiness I saw how the flash could cut through, how its harsh edge might echo the sharpness of couture.

The materials spoke loudly, each one asking to be seen on its own terms. A white backdrop gave them that space, let them radiate without distraction. For a moment I thought about folding the audience into the frame, but the collection asked for something else. I shot from angles that bent toward drama, compositions that carried tension.

Thank you, Harley, for opening that door. It was a night that felt both fleeting and unforgettable, a moment where fashion became atmosphere and presence.

Pt. 1
The garments stood like thoughts,
recycled into form,
a second music of the earth,
a rhythm of what remains.

Cloth once discarded
became a language of edges,
stitched fragments
arranged into an elegance
the world had forgotten.

The models moved,
not as bodies only,
but as gestures of invention,
carrying with them
an echo of plastics,
a memory of foam.

To witness it was to believe
that even in the ruin of matter,
in the ash of the ordinary,
a beauty persists
sustainable,
resilient,
a protest that gleams.

Such thanks to the amazing for having me and for each person who made this project possible.

I got angry today.
Angry at the unfinished lives,
like sketches left in a rainstorm,
their lines dissolving before the figure could emerge.

I got angry at the priests of striving
who polish the word dream until it cuts,
who make ladders out of scarcity
and dare the rest to climb.

Angry that art, so often,
is not the bloom but the soil;
a soil some are born to,
dark, rich, and tended,
while others kneel before gravel,
watering dust.

I got angry at the gatekeepers,
their hands pressed to the hinges,
their mouths shaping diminishment
like a slow, rehearsed song.

Angry at my own mind,
its litany of NO,
the quiet corrosion of possibility,
as if self were another enemy
in the long parade of enemies.

And angry, too, that my anger
is a mask others have chosen for me,
a mask they whisper into
before I even open my mouth.

This was meant to be a hymn to gold.
To the quiet architecture of Telfar,
to the way fabric makes a world.
But the hymn is broken glass.

The garden is golden, still,
its leaves burnished with light,
yet even here,
beneath the stillness,
the anger flowers.

As soon as I saw the gold of the dress meeting the golden blonde of her hair, the direction was undeniable. The shoot became a vision of a goddess, radiant and unearthly, moving through the garden as if it had grown for her alone. I leaned into warmth again, softening the light until it glowed, and pushed the greens into a lushness beyond the natural. The result is not simply a portrait, but an atmosphere. It culminated in an image where gold and green entwine, a world suspended in its own spell.

For these final images, I shifted course. The pull this time was warmth. I embraced the greens in a form closer to their natural state. I raised the temperature, letting the tones swell and soften, not chasing radiance but something quieter. The colors became less about brightness and more about a haze that lingers in the air on the hottest of days (because trust me, it was HOT). In the reflection of silver sunglasses, the eyes are obscured, yet the ease remains. For me, this edit is not a spectacle of light, but the feeling of an afternoon slowed to its own rhythm, the languid drift of a lazy summer day.
