An Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather is in place today across portions of the central and northern Plains into parts of the Midwest. Residents within the Enhanced Risk area should be prepared for a significant severe weather event capable of producing multiple rounds of dangerous thunderstorms.

Storms are expected to develop during the afternoon and continue through the evening and overnight hours. The strongest storms may become supercells capable of producing very large hail up to 2"-3", damaging wind gusts of 70mph to 80mph, and several tornadoes, some of which could become strong. The highest tornado threat will be associated with any discrete supercells that can remain isolated before storms eventually grow into larger clusters or lines. Widespread wind damage may become the primary concern later in the evening as storms organize and accelerate eastward. Anyone within the Enhanced Risk area should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to take action quickly if watches or warnings are issued. Severe weather of this magnitude can produce significant impacts over a large area in a relatively short period of time.

⚠️ Major Severe Weather Outbreak Expected Today Across the Midwest & Great Lakes ⚠️

A widespread and potentially significant severe weather event is expected to unfold across parts of , northern , northern , southern , Lower , and northern .

This is not your typical severe weather day. Numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to develop, bringing the threat of destructive straight line winds, very large hail, and multiple tornadoes, some of which could become strong to intense.

🌪️ Tornado Threat: Several tornadoes are possible, including the potential for strong tornadoes capable of producing significant damage.

Severe Weather Update Tornado Risk 🌪 Shifting South

Forecasters are increasingly concerned that a new round of severe thunderstorms could develop this evening across southern , northern , west central , northeast , and portions of central as the atmosphere recovers behind earlier storms.

The threat appears to be shifting farther south compared to earlier outlooks, with the greatest concern now focused from northeast Kansas through southern Iowa and northern Missouri into west central Illinois. Warm, humid air with temperatures in the 90s and dew points in the 70s will create an extremely unstable environment capable of supporting intense thunderstorms.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical wave that could lead to the development of a broad area of low pressure over the Bay of Campeche later this week.

At this time, environmental conditions are not expected to be very favorable for significant development, and any system that does form is expected to move inland over eastern Mexico by late weekend.
Development chances remain very low, with a 0% chance over the next 48 hours and only a 10% chance over the next 7 days.

While there is currently no immediate threat and odds of development are low, it's something we'll be keeping an eye on over the coming days. As always, we'll provide updates if anything changes.
