I've known Tracy for almost 15 years, and somehow we had talked about this portrait session longer than we'd actually planned it.
She shared part of her story with me. More than twenty years ago she lost her mom, and she talked about the faith that carried her through one of the hardest seasons of her life.
It reminded me of one of the things photography has taught me over and over again.
You can't understand a person by looking at them.
A portrait can show you someone's expression, the way they carry themselves, even how they choose to present themselves to the world. But it can't tell you what they survived to become that person.
That's why conversations have become one of my favorite parts of this work.
The photographs are how I'll remember this session.
The conversation is how I'll remember Tracy.
"Appreciate who you are, not who the world tells you to be. Don't shrink yourself to fit someone else's expectations. Honor who you are in this season."
I'm glad we finally made this session happen.
