UP CLOSE & PERSONAL SERIES - PART 2: THE DISTORTED DIPTYCH & RUNNING FROM SELF

Warped and distorted, this is the β€œugliness” we project onto ourselves when we dare to look. The side we deny. What do you see when you finally face it? Through forced perspective or composite, you cannot outrun yourself. In order to move forward and evolve, you have to embrace all sides of you fully and give yourself grace. There is always room to grow and there is always room to heal. πŸ¦‹

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL SERIES - PART 1: SHADOW & SPOTLIGHT

I created this new series as a study in self-confrontation β€” the deeply human instinct to stay on the surface, to numb ourselves in denial rather than sit with the discomfort of honest self-reflection. We hide from everyone. We never hide from ourselves.

Two shots, two truths. The body turns away β€” but the shadow doesn’t. It holds its ground, unbothered by what the self is still running from. There is nowhere left to go. The light finds you, holds you, exposes you. Not as punishment β€” as invitation. This is what it looks like to be seen before you’re ready. This is the work.

Throughout the continuation of the series, the camera gets close. Uncomfortably close. Because that is the point. Every frame puts the subject in direct relationship with themselves β€” their reflection, their shadow, their β€œdistorted” image staring back. It is about looking honestly. It is also about the courage it takes to turn inward β€” to do the shadow work, feel the temporary pain of truth and come out the other side with genuine self-worth, self-value and self-love. πŸ¦‹

While staying at Chateau d’Orquevaux () for their artist residency, I wanted to try something I haven’t done since I was a kid: designing.

Before getting into photography, I wanted to be a fashion designer/stylist. That was my childhood dream for a very long time, and then I later realized that wasn’t my passion and career path anymore. So when I met Frederico (), an Argentinian wire sculpture artist I met at the residency, I decided to get into designing again and see if he was open to bringing my idea to life. Thankfully, he was open to it, and in exchange, I took photos of a wire sculpture that he was working on at the residency. I chose Naja (), an interdisciplinary artist and fellow ATLien that I also met at the residency, to be the model for the bra. I was inspired by Frederico’s vibrant, whimsical art style and the iconic cone bra that Jean Paul Gaultier designed for Madonna for her Blonde Ambition World Tour in 1990.

Being at the residency showed me that I had free will to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and just be free to create β€” and it didn’t have to be photography. In a way, I felt like this was the perfect way to connect with my inner child and give her something special. πŸ¦‹
