A Piedmont Park elopement in Atlanta

Multi-day weddings have been one of my favorite things this year. You really get some of the best of both worlds: having an elopement that focuses on the two of you and your connection, and then later hosting the broader group of your favorite people at a hell of a rad party.

Part one is for you, part two is for everyone.

Courtney & Chris went this route: a Piedmont Park elopement with some immediate family last year, and today we’re having their reception at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.

Piedmont Park is literally steps from their apartment - a place they go all the time, that means something. We all walked together to Reflection Point for their ceremony, officiated by Courtney’s brother, then we explored!

I love plans like this because they prove that you don’t have to choose just one option if you don’t want to.

Thinking about a two-parter? Tell me everything!

The photos don’t just happen.

They’re the result of trust and truth.

Trust that I’m not trying to turn you into something you’re not. That there’s no wrong move in front of my camera. That you can be vulunerable and get incredible photos.

Truth that I’m constantly staying curious to find, never deciding ahead of time what I’ll see. That if you and your partner are more Ben & Leslie than Cathy & Heathcliff, that’s the vibe that comes across. That there are no stories being invented or manipulated.

And when we have both of those elements, the result is both beautiful AND real. You don’t have to choose.

Looking for real in your wedding photos? Get in touch, I’d love to hear all about your plans.

A year ago, Kelsey’s mom threw pottery for her wedding favors. Everyone got to choose their own cermic cup and then do a communal shot together at Kelsey & Andres’ wedding. In the backyard they’ve spent years working on, at a house that has always hosted their favorite people for gatherings.

The dress code was “outdo the bride,” and people REALLY showed up. Fringe, sparkle, color, tons of personality.

And then they wrapped it all up at a family-style dinner at their favorite restaurant nearby.

Friendly reminder: your wedding can look, and feel, like an incredible house party!

Happy Anniversary!

This is what it looks like when I get to be a part of the full story. Last year I photographed Erin’s surprise proposal to Summer, today is Erin & Summer’s wedding day, and tomorrow we’re doing their sunrise hiking session!

Getting to be with a couple the whole time is sp special; and it gives me a chance to understand their love and their relationship on an even deeper level, meaning the photos are even more real and authentic to them.

This is what it looks like when you elope at the base of the Tetons.

Cascade Canyon Turnout is wide open sagebrush, 360 degree mountain views, quiet that makes everything feel slower. No strenuous hikes to get there. Just you, the peaks, and however you want to spend the morning.

The light here is incredible any time of day. Sunrise is dreamiest. Sunset brings out warm tones on the peaks when the clouds cooperate. (But then when they don’t, we get misty, foggy, moody moments instead.) Still stunning: the Tetons never miss.

You could read your private vows at the base of the mountains. Take a walk through the sagebrush together. Pop some champagne (responsibily). Have a first look with no one else around at sunrise.

And from there, Cascade Canyon pairs beautifully with the rest of your adventure: Schwabacher Landing, Jenny Lake, and so much more. We can build a whole day of adventure around it!

If you're dreaming about the Tetons or Cascade Canyon specifically, I have a full guide on how to actually start planning.

Check it out and then get in touch when you’re ready to take the planning from a “someday” list to a real adventure!

You're going to see a lot of photographers call themselves documentary right now.

And some of them mean something completely different by it than I do. Some people consider themselves a mix of styles. Some use it interchangeably with other words that don’t really mean the same thing. That's all fine, I'm not here to control anyone's language.

But, because it isn’t always clear, here's what it means to me:

Documentary means I'm interfering as little as possible. I'm telling the story of what's naturally happening in front of me. I’m making images you can slide back into years in the future and still experience this exact moment in time.

My whole goal on your wedding day is to become so easy to ignore that you forget I'm there — so you can be vulnerable, be present, be weird, be yourselves.

I want to affect the scene in front of me as little as possible so that I can tell the story of the day, of the relationships, of the moments, honestly.

And that is always 10000x more interesting & meaningful than anything someone could direct.

Every single couple tells me they're awkward in front of the camera.

And, my god, do I understand how that is. I’ve had photoshoots where I nearly had a panic attack because they kept trying to turn me into a version of myself I didn’t recognize. Posing me in ways that felt fake or performative.

But the awkwardness wasn’t mine, it was from the box they were trying to put me in. It didn’t fit, and it was so uncomfortable.

And that’s why I work the way I do: because you don’t belong in a box and you don’t need me telling you how to exist or how to be in your relationship.

So I’m not here to tell you where to put your hands or to cue you to smile. To tell you to kiss or dip or do whatever other thing I might think is right for the moment. Because this isn’t about me, it’s about you and what your love actually looks like.

What I am here for is to help you feel comfortable being vulnerable and being yourself in front of the camera, so we can make some truly incredible - and real - photos together.

LGBTQ+ waterfall elopement north of Atlanta

A year ago, they chose to have their ceremony in front of a waterfall at the first trail they ever hiked together after moving to Georgia at Cochran Mill Park.

Gertrude & Karen were surrounded by children, parents, siblings, and friends all day. Spent the morning with a house full of people who loved them, all helping each other get ready for the day.

And then closed down the night together in a private space at 5Church Buckhead, toasting the couple over dinner.

Happy Anniversary, Gertrude & Karen!
