A Decatur wedding reception at the Ramspeck and Brick Store Pub.

Kathryn and Creighton eloped last December, just the two of them and three close friends at a park near their home. So this reception was part two: a celebration with a more expansive group at a gorgeously intimate venue that's just their style.

We started at the Ramspeck, heading upstairs for a beer in the Belgian Bar with the afternoon light spilling in through the windows. And then heading into the beer garden out back pulled us up short: a full house of strangers suddenly cheering on the couple in wedding clothes. Since this is the exact thing they eloped to avoid, we waved and turned right back around to run away.

And Kathryn & Creighton agreed with each other, laughing: "we made the right choice!"

Your day doesn't have to revolve around the wedding ceremony.

Start slow. Give yourself time to ground and ease in. Go through your normal rituals (that's where the magic and the intimacy live).

Get coffee. Work on your vows together. Go on a hike. Take a nap. Get lunch.

Change into your wedding outfits, exchange vows, explore the shoreline, climb the dune: spend time in this wild, adventurous place you love with your favorite person.

Attempt to fly a kite. Fail. Turn it into a great memory anyway.

End the day on the coast watching your first sunset as a married couple.

All of it’s the wedding, not just the vows.

So many of my couples tell me they want to be present for their wedding, for their guests, and their cocktail hour especially. A room full of people who flew in, took off work, drove hours, just to be in one place with you.

Most photographers treat guests like fringe, background details around the couple, treat cocktail hour like it doesn't matter. But I don't.

This is probably the only time in your life every person you love will be in the same place at once, so that's what I build our time around.

Quick and easy group photos. Five-minute breathing room walks instead of a full hour of posing for couple photos. Letting you be who you are.

All with the goal of maximizing your ability to be present and intentional.

You'll never have this exact room again: you should get to be in it.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it: photographers who treat one partner like the star and the other like set decoration.

Posed off to the side, barely visible, face turned away, there to hold something or frame the shot, but not meant to be seen. Like some kind of lawn gnome decorating the path leading to the main attraction.

I don't subscribe to the idea that one of you matters more on your wedding day. That this day belongs to one person and the other is there just to fill a gap. That one of you shouldn't care about weddings in the first place {esp if you're male or masc}, that you're just putting up with all of this "wedding stuff".

Nuh-uh. Both of you deserve to be seen, celebrated, delighted in. This is the day you've both built from things that light you up.

And if you both want to be the main attraction, then LET'S DO IT. And if you both want to be lawn gnomes, LET'S DO THAT, TOO.

A spring Juliette Chapel wedding in Dahlonega, GA.

Erin & Summer first wowed me at their proposal: Little Mulberry Park, the place they'd been going together since the earliest days of their relationship. And I knew their wedding would be just as chock-full of meaning.

Juliette Chapel has a small & intimate footprint, with tons of windows, and a very backyard house party vibe with how everyone can wander in and out of the buildings all night. The whole thing felt very much like Erin & Summer had their nearest and dearest over for a big family dinner.

They had a big reveal first look moment at the outdoor seating area, a close friend officiated the ceremony inside the chapel with a ton of personal stories to tell, and the entire night was full of happy tears, people holding onto each other, and a palpable feeling of how much these two are loved by their people.

A Chattanooga wedding at Hotel Chalet at the Choo Choo.

When your post-ceremony photos are way more “documenting date night” and way less “posing stiffly in a park.”

Chattanooga is way more than just a backdrop for Linzi and Adam. It's where a lot of their early relationship happened: favorite dates, first vacations together, the place they grew closer way before choosing to plan their wedding here.

They exchanged vows in The Arbor, an outdoor ceremony space right alongside the restored passenger cars that Hotel Chalet offers as an offbeat hotel room option. Vintage & completely Chattanooga.

Then we crossed the street to Clumpies Ice Cream Co., one of Chattanooga's most beloved local spots, and a place Linz & Adam love visiting. Colorful walls, hand-crafted ice cream, quirky artwork everywhere (not to mention incredible ice cream).

And the night ended in a huge dance party: 70s-inspired color, sparkle everywhere, vintage touches that matched the whole nostalgic thread of the day.

When I chat about wedding day plans with my couples, i'm always looking for special touches like this we can weave in. What would you want to include in your day that's a little out of the ordinary?

A downtown Macon engagement session.

Brooke and Travis are moving soon, so they wanted to document their time in this house before they do.

The session started in the kitchen with PB&J sandwiches, a slow dance in the living room, and a thorough cuddle of Ollie.

Then we headed into Macon, where they love spending time. First stop was the Quill at the Woodward: a speakeasy with low lighting and a 70s vibe. Drinks, some games, and privacy since we got there right at opening.

From there, through the alleyways over to the Hummingbird: a dive bar with loyal regulars, another round, darts, and herbal ci******es for the vibe.

Bryce Canyon or Zion: which one actually fits how you want your day to feel?

Both are stunning. That's not really the question. The real question is what kind of day you actually want: how much energy, how you feel about crowds, whether you want adventure or ease.

Zion is one of the most visited parks in the country. You'll feel it, even at sunrise, even on a weekday. Bryce is quieter: private, uninterrupted moments are a lot easier to come by.

Zion means shuttles, limited parking, planning around timing. Bryce's scenic drive covers 18 miles of overlooks, most with little to no hiking required.

Zion is hiking, movement, a little adrenaline. Bryce is slower: space to actually soak it in instead of rushing to the next spot.

Zion gives you dramatic cliffs and the Virgin River, a bold and cinematic feel. Bryce gives you hoodoos and wide open space, something quieter and more surreal.

Neither is better, they're just different days, for different couples.

There's no right way to do a first look.

It's just meant to be a private moment for the two of you, before the rest of the day gets loud. For a lot of couples, that's a real relief: seeing each other before you're standing in front of everyone, getting a minute to feel something before there's an audience.

Most of my couples end up choosing a lower-key version of the first look: they just head to where they need to be next, whenever they're ready, and end up together without any kind of moment built around it.

It’s for you, so there's nothing to perform. No holding a face, no "right" reaction, no tearing up on cue. Whatever comes up naturally is completely okay, even if that's nothing dramatic at all.

Walk into the room at the same time, get dressed together, have a big reveal, wait for the aisle, have a first touch or note exchange, or don't plan anything at all: all of it works.
