I couldn't tell if this lioness was as relaxed as she appeared to be. I'm guessing she wasn't.

For what felt like an eternity, she rested on a tree branch, outwardly calm but completely aware of everything around her. There was no movement, no roar, no drama. Just an unbroken gaze that made it impossible to look away.

A few minutes earlier, this lioness was impossible to see, revealed only by movement in the brush and the sounds of feeding.

With the hunt now over, she emerged from her hiding place. The blood tells the story of what had just happened. Her eyes tell another—focused, alert, and already scanning the landscape for what came next.

Something had captured its attention. Mine quickly followed.

For a few moments, this young vervet monkey sat perfectly still, completely absorbed by something beyond my view, allowing me to photograph a scene that felt entirely its own.

I knew something was there. I just couldn’t see it. Until I did.

The encounter began with birds suddenly taking flight, followed by movement in the brush. Then the leopard revealed itself one detail at a time: first the rosettes, then the outline of its body, until finally its profile emerged, amber eyes scanning the landscape.

Looking back, I’m reminded that my most memorable wildlife photographs rarely come from chance. They come from slowing down, observing, and waiting for the moment to reveal itself.
