I think when people picture newborn photographs, they imagine a quiet house, a sleeping baby, and older children who somehow remain patient and interested the entire time.

That is not what a house with a two-week-old, a three-year-old, and a five-year-old looks like. And honestly, it does not need to.

Rebecca wanted photographs of this season with her three babies at home. Her older two came over when they were curious, stayed for a little while, and then took off to play. We worked around that rhythm, moving from inside the house to the yard and bringing everyone together when the moment was right.

I wrote about this session because I think parents sometimes worry that newborn photographs will be too difficult once there are older children involved. But the older children do not need to behave like tiny adults. They just need enough room to be themselves.

If you are expecting a baby and already wondering how photographs could possibly work with your other little ones running around, you may find this helpful.

Early fall in Georgia is funny. The calendar says October, Pinterest says sweaters, and the weather may still say absolutely not.

That does not mean your family photographs cannot feel warm and seasonal. It just means we need to dress for the early fall we actually have.

I wrote a practical guide to choosing colors, using clothing your family already owns, keeping children comfortable, and pulling everything together without turning it into a full production.

If choosing clothes is the part that makes you want to forget the whole thing, start here.

Choose early fall family photo outfits that feel polished and comfortable in GA weather, without heavy layers or buying everyone new clothes.

Fall family mini sessions are now open for booking.
These are a simple way to update your family photographs before the holiday season without planning a full session.
Each family will have a reserved 15-minute appointment at White Oak Park in Dallas. The pond, pretty trees, and open landscape give us plenty of room to create a thoughtful mix of beautiful family portraits and the more natural moments in between.
And because this is Georgia, the leaves will change whenever they decide to change. The location will be beautiful whether we have full fall color or not.
The $225 session fee includes:
• A reserved 15-minute appointment
• Immediate family members
• Eight high-resolution digital images of your choice
• Personal printing rights
• The option to purchase the complete edited gallery
There are only six appointments available.

I can look through our family photographs from every season since Trace was born in 2004 and see how often I am missing from them.

Not because I wasn’t there. I was usually the person planning the moment and taking the picture.

I wrote this article about why mothers so often disappear from their own family photographs, particularly during fall and the holidays. It includes practical ways to change that, along with a simple phone guide you can save and send to whoever will be holding the camera at your next family gathering.

If you know the mother who is always remembering to photograph everyone else, share this with her. Better yet, make sure she is included next time.

Read the article and save the guide here:

Mothers often make the holidays happen while staying behind the camera. Here is how families can include Mom in photographs with greater care.

Fall Portrait Sessions are officially open.

I’ve reserved two late-September evenings at White Oak Park in Dallas, with just twelve appointments available.

Each 15-minute session includes plenty of direction, a private proof gallery, and five finished digital images of your choice. Additional photographs and the complete edited gallery will also be available after you see them.

$225, paid in full when booking.

If family photographs are somewhere on your fall list, but you keep thinking, “We’re just awkward in pictures,” read this before you talk yourself out of them.

Most families who look natural in photographs did not arrive knowing what to do. They were given enough direction that they could stop thinking about where to stand, what to do with their hands, whether the children were cooperating, and whether everyone looked sufficiently natural while trying very hard to look natural.

Natural family photographs are not usually accidental. They are thoughtfully arranged and then given enough room to breathe.

I wrote about what good direction actually looks like, why children do not need to perform for the camera, and how to choose a photographer who can create something polished without making your family feel staged.

Georgia fall photographs do not require sweaters, boots, and three layers when it is still 87 degrees outside.

If you are planning photographs for September, dress for the actual temperature. We can create an early-fall feeling through color instead: muted rose, faded blue, olive, warm neutrals, soft brown, and lighter fabrics that still breathe.

Comfortable children photograph better than overheated children, and nobody feels particularly autumnal while sweating through a cable-knit sweater.

This is one reason I love the Limelight hydrangeas at The McGarity House. In August, they tend to feel fresh, creamy, and summery. As we move into September, the blooms begin taking on softer pink and antiqued tones. We get a hint of fall without pretending Georgia has received the seasonal memo.

Which would you choose: the lighter August garden or the more antiqued September version? 🦋🌿🌞
